Expand your cultural understanding and broaden your career prospects
More than 50% of the world’s population uses two or more languages every day. In today’s globalised society, the ability to communicate in other languages can be an invaluable asset to your career.
When you study a language at Griffith, you’ll develop a solid understanding of how it functions and its use in society. Immerse yourself in your chosen language through study tours and overseas exchanges— all while refining your skills and expanding your cultural understanding.
You’ll also study linguistics—the science, nature and function of language and how it is used in society. Understanding how languages are developed and used will help you gain a solid understanding of your chosen language.

Sean Flanagan
Bachelor of Arts (Languages). Acting Senior Sergeant, Cultural Affairs Officer, First Nations and Multicultural Affairs Unit (FNMAU), Queensland Police Service (QPS).
Sean Flanagan studied a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Language, Culture and Society at Griffith’s Gold Coast campus. Halfway through his degree he travelled to Japan where he lived and worked for approximately three years. Upon returning from Japan, Sean joined the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in 2003 and saw an opportunity to bring the skills he had developed at Griffith to bear. Exploring the negotiation of cultural and language barriers to make a genuine difference, he won awards for his work and is now the Acting Senior Sergeant, Cultural Affairs Officer, in the First Nations and Multicultural Affairs Unit (FNMAU).
“I chose Griffith University due to its excellent reputation,’ Sean says. ‘What I liked most were the genuine interactions with the lecturers. They placed the interests and ambitions of their students at the forefront of their teaching and were very engaging. Study opened opportunities for me that have shaped my life and helped me achieve my goals. Looking back now, I am glad I chose Griffith University.”
