What is a course site?

A Canvas course site is the online hub for a Griffith course. A course site typically provides access to everything you need to complete the course requirements, including learning materials, assessment information and submission facilities, recordings of classes, readings, and more.

Accessing your course sites in Canvas

Your course sites are listed on your dashboard when you first log in to Canvas. You can also view favourited courses by clicking the Courses tile in the global navigation menu. For information on customising your list of courses, see How do I customise my courses list as a student? (Canvas Guides).

If you are unable to find your course site on your dashboard, this may be because:

  • If you have only just enrolled in the course, it may take approx. 24hrs for your course site to appear.
  • Course sites are, by default, not active until two weeks before the start of the trimester, unless your course convenor has specified otherwise.
  • Your course convenor may not have yet published the course. Try looking under All Courses to check if it has been published.  Some courses will remain unpublished until the start date, particularly for dynamically dated courses and intensives.  If you don’t find a course that you are expecting to study under All Courses, check your myGriffith enrolment.
  • Your dashboard is limited to display up to 20 course sites. If your dashboard is full, a full list of all your courses can be found under Courses > All Courses in the left-hand navigation.

The course site is made up of:

  1. The course navigation menu where you will find announcements, course profile, learning modules containing your course content, readings, marks and access to student support. You will also find software and tools you may use in your course including MS Teams, Echo360 and discussion/collaboration tools.
  2. The course home page which consistently link to your Assessment Overview, Teaching Staff contacts and your learning journey – a snapshot of your course.
  3. The right hand panel shows your To Do list keeping you up to date with important actions and announcements in your course.

The exact tools and features you use will depend on the courses you study and which tools and features the teaching team of each course decide to use. New Feature  -  Canvas  Smart  Search

Smart Search is a new Canvas feature that enables users to search for keywords throughout the course site, highlighting the pages where these keywords appear.

A list of all Canvas tools and features are available in the Canvas Student Guide (Canvas Guides). However, please note that some tools listed in the Canvas Student Guide may not be available to you.
