Why video assignments?

Griffith is committed to students having opportunities to strengthen their digital and communication skills throughout their studies. Creating videos that present a clear message with impact can provide that opportunity.

You may want to share the library's page Record and Edit Video with your students.

Using Studio to manage video assignments

Some people expect video creation to be easy – after all video is all around us! Others find this a daunting prospect. Using Canvas Studio for managing video assignments can make the process easier for students and educators.

You may want to share the page Using Studio to submit your video assignment with your students.

You can view students’ videos within SpeedGrader

If students submit their videos using Studio, you will be able to view their videos within the SpeedGrader screen, allowing you to:

  • use one screen to play and mark the video
  • add comments into the video timeline
  • mark using a rubric
  • use all of the regular feedback and marking features.

If students upload their video files instead of using Studio, you will need to download them to view them.

Step 1: Provide clear instructions

Your instructions for students should clearly list the task requirements especially:

  • The message their video should convey
  • Minimum and maximum time
  • Presentation style – for example, a PowerPoint type presentation, or a vodcast
  • Should the student appear via their webcam
  • Marking criteria and rubric

Step 2: Create an Assignment

There are two ways to set up a video assignment submission point, depending on whether the submission requires just a video (method 1) or a video and associated files (method 2).

Method 1: Submission of a video only

Only need the students to submit their video and no other files? Follow these steps.

  1. Follow the steps for setting up a new assignment
  2. Make sure you choose these settings:
    1. Submission Type: Choose Online from the drop down menu
    2. Online Entry Options: Check File Uploads
  3. Complete the other settings

Method 2: Submission of a video and associated files

If the assessment requires students to submit a video and other files such as PowerPoint or Word files, or a link to something they have created, then follow these steps.

Students cannot use the Mobile App to submit their assignment using this method.

  1. Follow the steps for setting up a new assignment
  2. Make sure you choose these settings:
    1. Submission Type: Choose Online from the drop down menu
    2. Online Entry Options: Check Text Entry
  3. Complete the other settings

Step 3: Mark submissions

  1. Go to SpeedGrader for the assignment
    1. Option 1: Go to the assignment and click SpeedGrader in the right hand panel
    2. Option 2: Go to Marks to open Markbook, click on the title of the column to open that assignment, and then click SpeedGrader in the right hand panel
    3. Option 3: Go to Marks to open Markbook, click in a cell in the assignment column, click the rectangle with arrow button, and then click SpeedGrader in the right-hand panel
  2. You can then play the video, and leave comments on the video timeline
  3. You can also mark using a rubric and other standard marking and feedback features.
