Getting to campus
Griffith University encourages staff and students to use sustainable transport, including the University’s intercampus buses, shared transport options, cycling, walking and public transport or video conferencing options to reduce the number of trips.
Sustainable Development Goals
Griffith University is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is committed to addressing the global challenge of poverty, while promoting environmental sustainability practices and contributing to communities that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive and culturally vibrant.
Commitment to sustainable commuting
Griffith University set targets (and measurements) for more sustainable commuting to campus in 2023 in our Sustainability Strategy 2023-2030.
As documented in our Sustainability Strategy 2023-2030, from 2025, we’re aiming for an annual increase of 5% over baseline year (2024) in the uptake of public transport usage, carpooling, and sustainable commuting transport such as e-scooters and (electric) bicycles.
- Public transport use is measured through Queensland Government Translink PT performance dashboard
- Carpooling is measured through our carpooling applications
- E-scooters and bicycle use is measured through access to end-of-trip facilities and secure storage facilities monitoring
Highlights from 2023 include:
1,044
carpooling trips were undertaken via the app
579
vehicles were removed from campus
1,998.24kg
of CO2 emissions were saved
38%
increase in end-of-trip facilities
Further details about our progress in meeting our target can be viewed in the 2023 Annual Sustainability Report.
Throughout 2023, Griffith undertook a range of actions to promote more sustainable community. For example, three new Electric Vehicle (EV) stations were installed across Griffith campuses in 2023, bringing the total number of publicly-accessible changers to 20. Additionally, the University procured seven battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 24 hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and transitioned 12 internal combustion engine vehicles to BEVs or HEVs
The Getting to and From Campus program also introduced a Carpooling application. 475 people signed up to the application, 2442 trips were requested, 1044 matched trips were undertaken, 579 vehicles were removed from campus, and 1998.24kg of CO2 emissions were saved.
The Beam Working Group and Trial was established across two campuses. Scooters were subsequently approved across all our campuses to act as a valuable last mile connection in Mobility as a Service.
Coupled with the improvements across all end-of-trip facilities this year, the program has measured a 38% increase in usage of facilities following the upgrades.
