Expressions of interest are now open

A number of University-level committees are currently accepting expressions of interest for Student Representative roles. This is a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand experience in university policy and governance, and be a part of discussions that shape the overall student experience.

Why become a student representative

Student representatives play a vital role in shaping university decisions, bringing forward student perspectives and fostering a positive and inclusive university community.

As a student representative you will:

  • contribute your voice and insights to discussions on key issues
  • collaborate with staff and fellow students to create positive change
  • help make decisions that directly impact student life, university policies, and the broader university community.

Selection process

The recruitment process for role vacancies is usually undertaken annually but there are also times throughout the year when vacancies become available.

Each committee may have different requirements around the number and type of students required, and these will be outlined in the vacancy information below.

Reviewing your application

The Chair of the relevant committee, or their nominee, will review your expression of interest and may contact you for an informal discussion if they need more information to consider your application.

When reviewing your application they will consider the following:

  • that you are a currently enrolled and eligible student
  • that you are in good academic standing
  • whether you have any current or previous conduct concerns
  • that you demonstrate a genuine interest in contributing as a student voice on the committee.

There may be other specified criteria that is also considered. For example, you may need to be studying within a particular academic group or at a particular level of study. A role may also only be for a certain cohort or type of student, such as for International students or First Nations students.

Student Positions on the Student Experience Sub-Committee

By being appointed or elected as a student representative on some University-level committees, you will also become a member of the Student Experience Sub-Committee.

Purpose

As a sub-commitee of Learning and Teaching Committee, the Student Experience Committee's role is to promote and enhance student engagement and the sense of community experienced by the entire student body. It does this by reviewing and monitoring student satisfaction, and the development of proposed initiatives for the on-going improvement of the student experience.

Student Respresentative roles on this committee include:
  • a nominated member from each formally constituted student association or guild
  • the elected higher degree research candidate member of Academic Committee
  • the elected coursework postgraduate student member of Academic Committee
  • one elected undergraduate student member of Academic Committee, nominated by the currently serving undergraduate student members of Academic Committee
  • the currently serving First Peoples student member of Academic Committee
  • all currently serving student members on Learning and Teaching Committee
  • all currently serving student members on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee
  • one student member of the HDR Candidate Representative Consultative Committee
Term of office

Student members of this committee are appointed for a period of one year.

Proposed 2025 Meeting Dates

Meetings are usually one hour in duration for this committee.

Attendance in-person is encouraged however there is also the option for student members to join the meetings online via Microsoft Teams.
