Support to help overcome financial or education disadvantage
This scholarship has been created in honour of Dr Vivienne Cowlishaw-Shortell, a highly respected and pioneering oral and maxillofacial surgeon, devoted member of Graduate Women Queensland Gold Coast (GWQGC) and committed mother, who passed away in 2019.
This scholarship will support a commencing or first-year undergraduate female student experiencing barriers to their education. Applications from students who are single mothers are encouraged.

Scholarship details
To be eligible, you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be female
- be a first-year Griffith University student enrolled full-time in Trimester 1 2024, having completed less than 80 CP (excludes OUA programs)
- demonstrate sound academic potential by:
- having achieved a GPA 4 or above in your first trimester (continuing students)
- having received an ATAR above 74 or OP equivalent (commencing students)
- be experiencing financial hardship and/or educational disadvantage based on a comprehensive assessment by the University.

Priority will be given to students who are not in receipt of any other scholarship funding. Applications from students who are single mothers are encouraged.
Value
The scholarship is valued at $3,000. Payments of $1,500 are made in Trimesters 1 and 2, provided conditions are met, up to maximum value of the scholarship.
Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date, subject to satisfying scholarship terms and conditions.
To remain eligible for the scholarship, you will be required to:
- Remain enrolled full time.
- Maintain a GPA of 4.5 or above.
Payments and ongoing recipient eligibility will be managed by the Scholarships Office. These conditions are verified at census date for each trimester.
If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, it is at the discretion of the donor to withhold the trimester instalment or terminate the scholarship.
The scholarship cannot be deferred, and the recipient must commence studies in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Applications, including any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.
Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship at any time.

This scholarship honours Dr Vivienne Cowlishaw-Shortell, a highly respected and pioneering dental surgeon, devoted member of Graduate Women Queensland Gold Coast and committed mother, who passed away in 2019.
The establishment of this scholarship will continue Dr Cowlishaw-Shortell’s passion for tertiary education and supporting women to begin or complete their degree, especially those experiencing financial hardship.
This scholarship is created in conjunction with the family of Dr Cowlishaw-Shortell and Graduate Women Queensland Gold Coast through the creation of a Griffith endowment fund.
