Support to compete in a Commonwealth Games sport
The Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) has established the Ron Clarke Brighter Futures Scholarship to honour the memory of Ron Clarke AO MBE.
The scholarship supports an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples student who is an elite athlete competing in a Commonwealth Games sport.

Scholarship details
To be eligible, you must be:
- an Australian citizen
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- a Griffith undergraduate student (this includes school leavers and non-school leavers, commencing and continuing students)
- an elite athlete competing in a Commonwealth Games sport and be a member of the Griffith Sports College or be eligible and have applied for membership
- experiencing financial hardship and/or educational disadvantage.
Preference will be given to students or alumni from the Clontarf Foundation (male) and the Stars Foundation (female).
You may be asked to provide a Confirmation of Heritage (Note: A letter of confirmation is usually obtained from an incorporated Indigenous organisation and stamped with their Common Seal).

- sporting CV: A comprehensive date-ordered list (showing 2022 first in the list and going backwards, that is, 2021, 2020, 2019) of your sporting achievements, including times and placing/ranking
- Confirmation of Heritage—optional if held. A letter of confirmation is usually obtained from an incorporated Indigenous organisation and stamped with their Common Seal.

Shortlist information
Assessment is made based on the following five categories:
- financial hardship
- home environment and responsibilities
- English language difficulty
- personal illness and disability
- educational disruption.
Applicants may be requested to attend an interview.
Value
The scholarship is valued at $11,000. Payments of $5,500 are made in Trimesters 1 and 2, provided conditions are met, up to maximum value of the scholarship (pro-rata payments for part-time study).
Payment
Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date, subject to the recipient satisfying scholarship terms and conditions.
To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients will be required to:
- remain enrolled at Griffith as a full-time student in an approved program at census date with a minimum GPA of 4.0
- maintain an elite level in their chosen Commonwealth Games sport, evidenced by submitting a sporting performance report biannually
- remain a member of the Griffith Sports College.
Should the scholarship recipient request part-time enrolment due to increased training for and performance in the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, payment will be paid at 50% of the full value per trimester if approved.
A scholarship recipient may take leave of absence in accordance with University policy. Scholarship benefits are suspended for the period of leave of absence or deferment. A scholarship recipient who is not enrolled and is not on an approved leave of absence will lose their scholarship.
The recipient may be invited to meet with the donor and feature in marketing materials to promote the scholarship
The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, it is at the discretion of the Scholarship Selection Committee to withhold the trimester instalment, or terminate the scholarship. The recipient must show cause to the Scholarships Office why the scholarship should not be cancelled.
Applications, including any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.
Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.

About Ron Clarke
Ron Clarke's sporting achievements included:
- lighting the flame at Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
- competing in athletics at two Olympic Games: Tokyo 1964, and Mexico City 1968 (winning a Bronze in the 10,000m in Tokyo)
- winning three Commonwealth Games silver medals: the three-mile event at the Perth 1962 Games and in the three and six-mile events in the Kingston 1966 Games in Jamaica
- breaking 19 official world records over distances from two miles (3.2km) to 20km
- being one of inaugural inductees in Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.
Ron Clarke also served as Mayor of the City of the Gold Coast between 2004 and 2012. He was instrumental in the Gold Coast being selected to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
