This scholarship provides financial assistance to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who are experiencing educational disadvantage to undertake further studies at an honours or postgraduate (by coursework) level at Griffith University.

Scholarship details
To be eligible, you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander*
- be enrolled or eligible for admission into a one-year honours-level or a postgraduate (by coursework) degree
- demonstrate educational disadvantage based on a comprehensive assessment by the University
- demonstrate academic merit.
*You may be asked to provide a Confirmation of Heritage. Note: Letter of Confirmation is usually obtained from an incorporated Indigenous organisation and stamped with their common seal.

Application assessment
Information provided by individuals in their Griffith online scholarship application is assessed and ranked in accordance with the following Educational Disadvantage Assessment categories:
- Financial Hardship
- Home Environment and Responsibilities
- English Language Difficulty
- Personal Illness and Disability
- Educational Disruption
- Relocation within Australia
Priority will be given to students who:
- are commencing their one-year honours or postgraduate (by coursework) degree
- are not in receipt of other scholarship funding
- either demonstrate the potential for or have the proven ability to successful academic progression
- have been awarded previously.
Value
The Patience Thoms First Peoples (Honours and Postgraduate) Scholarships are valued at a maximum of $4,000, payable in instalments. Instalment amount is based on enrolled credit points per trimester, being $500 per 10 Credit Points, up to the maximum value of the scholarship.
Payment
Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date, subject to the recipient satisfying the scholarship terms and conditions.
Please note, payments made during part-time study may be taxable.
To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients will be required to:
- remain enrolled in an eligible honours-level or postgraduate by coursework degree
- remain in good academic progress (GPA 3.5 or above).
A scholarship recipient may take leave of absence in accordance with University procedure. Scholarship benefits are suspended for the period of leave of absence or deferment. A scholarship recipient who is not enrolled and is not on an approved leave of absence will lose their scholarship. A recipient who is excluded from study under any University procedure will lose their scholarship.
Recipients:
- must accept their admission offer from Griffith University (commencing students)
- must accept the scholarship offer, made via email, by the date indicated on the offer, and may be required to provide additional documentation to support their application
- who are on approved cross-institutional study continue to remain eligible for scholarship benefits, and are required to provide documentation to prove cross-institutional study and academic load
- who withdraw from their studies in two consecutive trimesters will not be eligible to receive a scholarship payment in the subsequent trimester.
