Scholarship opportunities for elite athletes to pursue higher education

The Griffith Sports Excellence Scholarships enable gifted athletes—who have the potential to perform at a sound academic level at a tertiary institution—to gain a higher qualification without forfeiting their sporting opportunities.

These scholarships are available to commencing and current Griffith students.

In recognition of Griffith's strong relationship with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), up to four scholarships are dedicated to AIS identified and categorised athletes.

Scholarship details

To be eligible, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or permanent humanitarian visa holder
  • eligible for admission into or currently enrolled in any Griffith University undergraduate or postgraduate (by coursework) degrees in 2025
  • competing at an elite level (nationally or internationally) in your chosen sport. Your chosen sport must either be:
    • listed as a funded sport in the Australian Sports Commission's Australian Sports Directory
    • an Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth Games sport.

Statements

All statements you complete will be considered.

  • Personal statement: To give yourself the best chance, we recommend you complete the personal statement. In 500 words or less, outline your:
    • career goals and aims
    • sporting achievements—either in this section or as an attachment (see supporting documentation section below).
  • Supporting documentation: You must upload the following in the supporting documentation (other) section:
    • A comprehensive date-ordered list (showing 2024 first in the list and going backwards, that is 2024, 2023, 2022, etc.) of your sporting achievements, including times and placing/ranking
    • Copies of your most outstanding sporting certificates/awards/copies of media articles that make you stand out in your chosen sport.

Griffith Sports Excellence Full Scholarship

These scholarships have a maximum value of $28,000, payable in instalments. Instalment amount is based on enrolled credit points per trimester, being $875 per 10 Credit Points, up to the maximum value of the scholarship.

Griffith Sports Excellence Development Scholarships

These scholarships have a maximum value of $5,000, payable in instalments. Instalment amount is based on enrolled credit points per trimester, being $625 per 10 Credit Points, up to the maximum value of the scholarship.

Please note, payments made during part-time study may be taxable.

Membership of the Griffith Sports College

Recipients of Sports Excellence Scholarships are automatic members of the Griffith Sports College. Membership includes personal assistance and study assistance, as outlined in the Elite Athlete Support Policy.

Payments

Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date, subject to satisfying scholarship terms and conditions.

Please note, payments made whilst studying part-time may be taxable.

Sponsor details

Griffith is an elite-athlete friendly university and has a strong commitment to sport and the role it plays in a balanced educational environment. Fostering elite athletes and helping them to participate in sport while studying is a major part of that commitment. Griffith has many links with local and international sporting organisations. Griffith University, through the Griffith Sports College, assists elite athletes in sourcing flexible study means to enable them to continue performing at optimum level while studying.

To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients will be required to:

  • continue to meet the eligibility requirements
  • remain enrolled at Griffith University*
  • remain in good academic progress (GPA 3.5 or above); a student who is excluded from study under any University procedure loses their scholarship
  • maintain an appropriate status in their sport and submit sporting performance reports on a biannual basis.

*Recipients studying through OUA will be eligible for their scholarship benefit payment if they are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in one of the following three programs:

  • Bachelor of Applied Financial Advice
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Business
  • Bachelor of Communication
  • Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Scholarship recipients:

  • may change their degree program without affecting their scholarship; however, the maximum period for which scholarship benefit may be paid is limited to the balance of the scholarship benefit
  • may take leave of absence in accordance with university procedure (scholarship benefits are suspended for the period of leave of absence or deferment)
  • who are not enrolled and is not on an approved leave of absence may lose their scholarship
  • who are on approved cross-institutional study continue to remain eligible for scholarship benefits and are required to provide documentation to satisfy the Sports Scholarships Committee of cross-institutional study and academic load, including transfer of credit points to the scholarship recipient’s Official Academic Transcript
  • are expected, on all possible occasions, to publicly acknowledge the support and assistance of the Sports Excellence Scholarship scheme
  • are expected to represent the University at such functions deemed appropriate by the Sports Scholarship Committee to promote the University and its Sports Excellence Scholarship scheme during their scholarship tenure.

The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated.

Applications, including referee reports and any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Offers are made via email.

A person awarded a Griffith Sports Excellence Scholarship must accept the scholarship by the date indicated on the scholarship offer, or the scholarship offer will be withdrawn and directed to another applicant.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.

Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.
