Semiconductor devices are a ubiquitous part of modern technology and a key enabler for future developments in flexible energy solutions. The size and energy efficiency of power electronics often limited by their operating temperature and ability to dissipate heat. The greater the temperature difference the more efficient the heat dissipation.

Silicon Carbide is a robust compound semiconductor material which excels in challenging high-temperature environments. This offers the opportunity to develop more efficient, compact power electronics capable of running at higher temperatures. It also enables the development of micro-electro mechanical sensors (MEMS) for pressure, strain, etc. that can operate under harsher conditions as well as combining those with optically based techniques which are “self-powered.”

Through cutting-edge research in materials development, silicon carbide microelectronics, micro-electromechanical systems, and microfluidics is driving the creation of technologies that enhance everyday life. By integrating physics, chemistry, biology, applied mathematics, and engineering, this research focuses on optimising materials to improve performance and functionality across diverse industries. Our purpose-built facilities provide the ideal environment for advancing these breakthroughs, offering invaluable resources to researchers and businesses across the country.

During the 20th century the first quantum revolution brought us rapid technological advances through understanding and engineering of systems with low quantum complexity including lasers, GPS, and semiconductors. The second quantum revolution builds on this success by leveraging a more complete understanding of quantum systems using highly non-classical and distributed effects including entanglement. This new frontier challenges our everyday intuition and presents both exciting opportunities and significant hurdles.

At the heart of this  exploration lies a return to the most fundamental questions about the nature of physics, seeking to unlock the true potential of quantum systems.  This research spans several key areas, including quantum information theory, plasma physics, quantum decarbonisation and algorithms, quantum measurement and estimation, quantum foundations, quantum thermodynamics and modelling.  Together, these fields are paving the way for breakthroughs that could redefine our technological landscape.

Our Quantum Experiment research theme focuses on advancing the frontiers of precision measurement and sensing across diverse applications. By leveraging the unique properties of quantum systems, our work explores electric field sensing, enabling unparalleled sensitivity in detecting and measuring fundamental physical interactions. We also delve into the sensing of biological molecules and particles, driving innovations in biotechnology and environmental monitoring. This cutting-edge research offers significant potential for applications in healthcare, materials science, and beyond.

This theme explores the transformative potential of quantum mechanics to revolutionise technology, focusing on quantum cryptography, quantum computing, quantum networking, and quantum entanglement. Researchers are developing next-generation quantum algorithms and new forms of quantum information processing, addressing fundamental challenges such as reconciling quantum theory with the macroscopic world and the nature of time. In close collaboration with the National Centre for Quantum Communication and QUATRI’s experimental teams, we aim to deepen our understanding of quantum correlations and quantum hardware. This research is driving advancements in fields like cryptography, optimisation and artificial intelligence, unlocking new possibilities for industries worldwide.
