The Steven Belz Prize for Human Origins: Australia provides three $15,000 gift awards to support ongoing research. The awards are open to an ARCHE individual researcher for projects in the field of human origins, with a particular emphasis on the chronology and timeframe of human migrations, occupation history and lifestyles on the Australian continent. This prize aims to foster innovative research in one or more of the following sub-fields: archaeology, palaeontology, geochronology, biological anthropology, genetics, and environmental studies.

To be considered for the prize, the applicant must be an ARCHE-aligned academic staff member, student, or adjunct member. We especially welcome applications from Honours students, PhD students, and Early Career Researchers. To apply, please send:

  1. a Curriculum Vitae (CV);
  2. a 1–2-page brief which outline which details: a) your overall plan for a new or an ongoing project; b) your contribution to the project (your role in the direction, collection, analysis, and publication plan); and, c) the importance of the work for understanding the chronology and timeframe of human migrations, occupation history, and lifestyles on the Australian continent.

Selection will be made by a panel made up of ARCHE staff members and a researcher external to the Centre.

Two of the three prizes were awarded in 2024. Another call for applications will be announced in 2025. For further information, please contact Ms Jo Papas, Centre Coordinator, email: j.papas@griffith.edu.au.
