We develop and support all aspects of Indigenous research at Griffith
The Indigenous Research Unit (IRU) is committed to creating an environment that fosters the sharing of Indigenous research and knowledges, organisational engagement with and between Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, develops the research capacity of academics and research candidates, and educational advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and higher degree research (HDR) candidates.
Our goals
Undertake research relevant to and prioritised by, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians
Support and facilitate research capacity development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous researchers
Publish and disseminate outcomes of research
Positively influence policy to improve socio-economic conditions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Seek funding and resources to support research relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Our community
Building strong relationships is how we create a welcoming research community of learning, where Indigenous culture and excellence is nurtured, valued and celebrated.
We develop and maintain productive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the University.
Through these relationships, career and educational pathways are supported, with a specific focus on community-driven and applied research.
We pursue projects identified by the community. This requires proactive dialogue and engagement with community members.
Partnerships and collaborations
Our emphasis is on strong partnerships that will increase opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in terms of career and educational prospects.
We work in collaboration with GUMURRII Student Success Unit and Griffith Graduate Research School (GGRS) to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HDR candidates with support and guidance throughout their research journey.
In collaboration with the Research Education and Development (RED), the Indigenous Research and Knowledge Seminar Series showcases Indigenous researchers and HDR candidates researching Indigenous topics and working with Indigenous communities.
Griffith Library and IRU collaborated to develop the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Research Library Guide.
Growing our own
We aim to grow our research portfolio, resulting in strong relationships with various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
From this research, we will also develop our own approaches to research and grow the body of knowledge in this area.
We will also work towards ‘growing our own’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics and postgraduate students through pathways from undergraduate to postgraduate studies in partnership with the GUMURRII Student Support Unit.
The Pathways in Research online course will be launched soon to help further grow our own, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate students knowledge on research sector pathways.
