CSIRO Industry PhD Program (iPhD)

The CSIRO Industry PhD Program (iPhD) is a four-year research training program, focusing on applied research that benefits industry by solving real-world challenges. It aims to produce the next generation of innovation leaders with the skills to work at the interface of research and industry in Australia.

This particular opportunity is about research in the explanation and validation of AI techniques, such as computer vision used in marine debris and life detection and monitoring.

Successful students are subject to the policies, procedures and guidelines of the participating university in addition to the CSIRO Industry PhD Program terms and conditions. Students will receive a standard PhD on completion.

Scholarship details

The research will be undertaken at the School of Information and Communication Technology, Griffith Sciences Group, Griffith University.

The position will be primarily based at the Nathan Campus but will require time spent at the industry partner (KJR)’s office.

The project includes a structured professional development and  training program to develop your applied research skills.

The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background. To be successful within this role, you should have a Bachelor's degree with Honours or a Master's degree in computer science or related areas. You will have evidence of a passion for research and problem-solving, with a strong desire to undertake research in AI and software engineering.

  • Expressions of interest are welcome from Australian citizens or Permanent Residents, or a New Zealand citizen.
  • Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Procedure.  For further information on the eligibility requirements for the program refer here.
  • Be able to commence the program in the year of offer.
  • Be prepared to be located at the project location(s) that the host university has approved and, if required, comply with the host university’s external enrolment procedures.
  • Be prepared to undergo onboarding to CSIRO, which will include passing mandatory government background checks (allow for between 4 to 8 weeks) and complete any other CSIRO requirements.

The 2025 CSIRO (iPhD) Scholarship has an annual stipend of $47,000 (indexed) for a period of up to four years of full-time study with an additional Project Expense and Development  package of  $13,000 per annum.
