Vice Chancellor's Awards

Dr Haefner and Shania are being recognised and highly commended for their work with the Griffith Asia Business Internship. In a relatively short period, The Griffith Asia Business Internship (GABI) program, hosted by the Griffith Asia Institute (GAI), has provided internships in the Asia-Pacific to a large number of students, has attracted significant NCP funding, managed stakeholder relationships with host providers very effectively, whilst providing excellent virtual internship provisioning during COVID, to maintain continuity of access to this experience for students.

Dr Sharma’s work in establishing the Pacific Islands Centre for Development Policy and Research, formerly the South Pacific Centre for Central Banking, has resulted in significant profile building for Griffith University in the Pacific region and has led to the development of a number of relationships and bilateral MOUs that would have otherwise not been established, resulting in Griffith University hosting many high-status delegations on campus. His work through the Centre has grown and been sustained over several years, attracting various funding opportunities particularly through the DFAT Australia Awards, for the delivery of capacity building projects that underpin this collaboration and makes him a worthy winner of this award.

Dr Platz is recognised for implementing an innovative studio course model. Leveraging the Virtual Learning Environment and PebblePad Personal Learning Platform to facilitate critical reflection, self-directed learning, peer assessment and experimental creative experiences, resulting in exceptional student engagement and satisfaction.

Griffith Tax Clinic was recognised for a Work Integrated Learning initiative that enables students to confidently transition from university student to tax professional through providing free tax assistance and tax workshops for vulnerable community members. Students develop 'teamwork' 'problem solving' and 'communication skills' and reflect upon their experience and possible tax reforms to improve the tax system for all.

From within Campus Life, the team has been working hard over the last year to implement a number of initiatives to advance the University strategic goal of increasing the sustainability practices to help create a Future for All. Dr Lucantoni is highly regarded by the University community as a trusted business partner for staff and students and plays a crucial role partnering with others leading to cross-boundary successful initiatives and objectives.

Dr Aminde’s research has made significant contributions towards the epidemiology and prevention of non-communicable diseases by targeting major risk factors like unhealthy diets, hypertension, obesity and alcohol.

Dr Peel’s research towards the dynamics and drivers of infectious disease in wildlife has made outstanding contributions to our understanding of the emergence of new viruses from bats and how human modification of natural systems impacts the risk of viral spillover from bats.

Associate Professor Grant is acknowledged for his extensive and sustained transformation of learning and teaching practices over nearly two decades, not only in the Bachelor of Pharmacy but across the Health Group which have enhanced teaching staff and student outcomes aligned, aligning with Group and University strategic KPIs. Gary is a leader in the use of innovative technologies that simulate 'real life' industry situations providing students with quality hands-on learning.

The Remedy Project Team research the potential for music to promote positive health determinants, alleviate negative ones and contribute to First Nations’ health, wellbeing and healing overall. Their work is transforming research practices through an exceptional approach to research ethics and translation that hold the project’s diverse stakeholders at their core.

Professor Lam has received this award for his significant commitment to strategies and mentoring in both clinical and academic settings that support higher degree research candidates and guide them towards excellence.

Professor Kendall has demonstrated excellence through her work in rehabilitation and disability research and distinction in leadership through the Inclusive Futures: Reimagining Disability Beacon.

Professor Brough has made significant contributions to research towards organisational psychology, particularly occupational health psychology, and demonstrated excellence in leadership through the Centre for Work, Organisation and Wellbeing.

The team co-designed the Tracking Cube with industry partners, health practitioners and community Elders - a culturally responsive holistic approach to screening, diagnosing and supporting neurodevelopmental concerns in primary care, particularly aimed at children in remote communities who would otherwise go undetected.

Associate Professor Mavin has received this award for his significant commitment towards embedding higher degree research candidates into industry programs across a range of projects in the aviation industry.

The group were awarded for the outstanding support they provide for the University's Open Conservatorium programs. The team's broad engagement efforts support the Open Conservatorium's connection to Queensland communities through music education and participation, which has led them to be a national leading program with more than 10,000 students nominated annually for 16 programs – clearly demonstrating the impact, value and attraction it brings the University.

Fiona was awarded for her support and engagement with the Digitising the Deep Past team, the Laura State School, and the wider remote and First Nations community. Fiona is praised for building open, respectful, caring and genuine relationships with every point of contact.

Awarded for the team’s invaluable support and dedication towards creating an environment where students can access the support they need to succeed and thrive during their academic journey. This relatively small team assists over 4,000 students with a disability, which has seen a 67% increase since 2018. One of their more recent achievements, was the 100% satisfaction rating they received in the recent International Student Barometer survey.

With special mentions given to David’s time within the Australian Rivers Institute, we celebrate David for exceeding the expectations of his position. Tina is being recognised as a leader of Reconciliation at Griffith University. Having supported or led multiple Reconciliation initiatives, Tina consistently inspires and leads others in making remarkable contributions towards Griffith’s values including recognising the unique place of First Peoples in our history and culture and the importance of respecting Indigenous knowledge, culture and talent, and building the cultural capability of staff and students.

With resounding nominations reflecting an outstanding level of professionalism, dependability, and efficiency, Irene is recognised with a Highly Commended within the Excellence in Leadership category for her sustained contributions towards facilitating essential services that support the research capability and achievements of Griffith Criminology Institute.

Associate Professor Sebar is being recognised for her work on the Building Public Health Capacity in Cambodian Communities short-term program. Offering a unique and transformative learning experience for students, this program has thrived, enabling a close and collaborate partnership with the non-government organisation Children’s Action for Cambodia (CAD). Building Public Health Capacity in Cambodian Communities is making a long-term and marked impact on the communities in which it is based, exhibiting strong markers of sustainability through the course of the past eight years, whilst building strong stakeholder relationships and attracting a diverse range of student participants.

Professor Avery is a world-recognised expert in drug discovery. Recognised with the award for Research Impact, her work has contributed to the development of drugs for multiple disease indications, most recently in the fields of cancer and neglected diseases. She pioneered image-based drug discovery for parasitic and rare diseases.

Professor Burford is awarded a Highly Commended for Research Leadership Award. With an international reputation for research excellence in ecology, her position as Dean (Research Infrastructure) has assisted the University and Australian Rivers Institue with funding and strategic direction to continue important research intiatives.

Director at the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery, Professor Katherine Andrews is recognised with the Research Excellence Award for Research Leadership for her ground-breaking malaria research and work to raise the profile of women in STEM.

The Ice Age Art in Indonesia Team are awarded Outstanding Research Excellence for their discovering and dating of the oldest known rock art on Earth – a scene depicting a Sulawesi pig in an Indonesian limestone cave, which is 45,000 years old.

Associate Professor Lauren Ball is awarded the Research Supervision Award for developing a suite of strategies to support researchers, including a co-designed handbook, knowledge database, media training, professional development workshops, weekly ‘huddles’ and a YouTube series, ‘How to Research.’

Professor Catherine Pickering is also recognised with the Research Supervision Research Excellence Award for her Quantitative Literature Review Method, which has supported the publication for more than 300 HDR students. These reviews are cited seven and a half times the rate of other publications.

Professor Tanya Smith is recognised with the Mid-Career Research Award for her outstanding contribution to anthropological research, including the publication of highly accessible, ‘The Tales Teeth Tell,’ a book about surprising ways in which teeth illuminate ancient human development.

Dr Jamie Ranse is awarded the Early Career Researcher Award for his timely contribution to emergency healthcare in highly visible, large-scale events, including emergencies. Dr Ranse helped to shape Queensland’s COVID-safe events guidelines.

Suzanne Rosolen is recognised for Excellence in Client Partnership for her instrumental role in the development and ongoing refinement of Joint Appointments Deeds across the Griffith Health Group.

Scott Feely is acknowledged for his Remarkable Contributions towards the successful award of Health Group’s grant submission of $13.8M associated with the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program and its initiatives.

Ruth Simpkins receives a Highly Commended for her demonstrated leadership and commitment to promoting sustainability at the University. From planting edible gardens and harvesting food, to reusing discarded materials in play, Ruth is leading the way in developing pro-globe habits within the youngest of children through her work at the Boronia and Tallowwood Early Education Centre.

Bernie Girard is acknowledged for his central involvement and role representing the University with the Tertiary Collection of Student Information (TCSI) validation and verification process for government reporting.

Mel Gilbert accepts the Excellence in Client Partnership Award (HEW 1-5) for her proactive commitment, hard work and reliability.

Mark L’Estrange is awarded Excellence in Client Partnership Award (HEW 6-10) for his coordination of the retention and progression exercise for offshore students throughout the implications thrown up by COVID-19.

The Student Health, Counselling and Wellbeing Team are awarded Excellence in Enhancing Student Experience for always being there for our students, including those that are remote and offshore, during unprecedented work and study conditions.

The Committee is awarded the Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award for its work developing and embedding the framework for teaching First Peoples inclusion content and cultural competency in the Bachelor of Business.

Professor Sarojni Choy has delivered a transnational program over a sustained period of time which has resulted in a very engaged cohort of alumni in senior positions in Singapore, contributing to the enhancement of Griffith's international profile. Professor Choy was quick to respond to the challenges that border restrictions in recent years posed for Transnational programs and ensured Griffith's reputation for delivering excellent academic programs customised to the needs of partners was maintained.

Dr Sohil Khan has made a sustained contribution to Griffith's engagement in India through his cultivation of our relationship with Manipal Academy of Higher Education, which now includes joint PhD supervision, research collaboration and student mobility.

The joint program with Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NUCM) is Griffith's largest in terms of student participation. The team has worked tirelessly to ensure the partnership's success, measured not only in terms of the number of students, but also their academic success and the development of other collaborative activities that have emerged, including a joint PhD program.

Professor Stuart Bunn has been awarded Most Outstanding Contribution to Overall Internationalisation for his mammoth contribution to Griffith’s international reputation for excellence in water science through the development of a network of international collaborators and strategic partnerships.

Associate Professor Jane Fowler is recognised with Most Outstanding Contribution to Overall Internationalisation for her exemplary leadership of DFAT-funded Papua New Guinea Program resulting in a Graduate Certificate in Counselling for PNG participants. This is a program that has the potential to be extended across the Pacific.

The team is awarded Most Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Short Term Global Mobility Programs for a tour that invites multinational participants to apply international industry and community knowledge to analyse sustainability, authenticity and competitiveness of destinations.

Ms Laura Irvine-Brown has designed authentic teaching and learning materials that promote active and genuine student engagement in the Griffith Occupational Therapy Program. She assumes the role of 'ally' with her students and strives to create teaching and learning environments that are safe, inclusive, and supportive, providing a foundation for deep learning.

Dr Kelly Shoecraft is recognised for implementing a Community of Practice approach that has improved student engagement, critical thinking, and inclusion in the Masters of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages) and Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics programs. Using flipped classroom approaches and a variety of chosen technologies, Kelly motivates and inspires students make connections between theory and practice.
