Understanding banking in Australia
When you arrive in Australia, we recommended that you have access to approximately AU$3,000 to cover any immediate costs. In the long term, the easiest and most affordable way to access your money in Australia is to set up an Australian bank account.
The Australian Government requires you to have access to AUD $29,710 in savings to cover annual living costs. Visit our cost of studying in Australia page for more information.
When you first arrive
You will be able to withdraw money at Australian automatic teller machines (ATMs) if your debit card is a part of the Plus, Cirrus or Visa networks. Please ensure you check with your bank before you arrive in Australia as you may need an updated card or pin to access this service.
