Award-winning software company hosts FirstWave Awards to celebrate innovation and industry collaboration, with $2,500 cash prize
At the end of Trimester 1 and 2, the School of ICT and multi-award-winning Software company, FirstWave, host the FirstWave Industry Awards. The event is open to all ICT students and staff, and selected industry partners. It is a great opportunity for 1st or 2nd year students to gain insight into the WIL Project if they choose to undertake this in final year, and to celebrate the work of their peers.
At the awards event, you will see the three to four most innovative project groups from the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Project course present their project to a panel of industry judges to compete for a $2,500 cash prize. It’s an opportunity for WIL students to build on their presentation skills, network with industry and showcase their hard work.

T1 2023
Team name: Destiny
The Project: The Yakka mobile canvas app is designed for employees to track hours spent on tasks, offering valuable insights into resource utilization. As CITEC focuses on professional and consultancy services, these insights are essential for meeting customer objectives. However, the current system lacks an easy time input capability, and Service Now is unavailable on staff mobiles. Yakka aims to address these issues by providing finesse of features like integrating Power BI reporting, dynamic project (OP) code addition, scheduling meetings in Outlook, email reminders for task completion at the end of the day, and a unique "Cooee" feature to gauge employee workload satisfaction.
T2 2022
Team name: HTH
The Project: VR Home Design for Rehabilitation and Disabilities (Home to Hospital). This Project provides a virtual environment for both patients and therapists to design the patient’s new home environment, using existing technological devices, such as mobile phones. The aim of this project is to help patients with disabilities design their homes when they are in the hospital and bring new technology devices into the rehabilitation and allied health fields.
T1 2022
Team name: Halo
The Project: Quaternion-based alignment monitor for cordless hand drill. The goal of the project is to improve a prototype, “Halo”, developed by Dillenger Electric Bikes that aims to provide cordless drill levelling guidance. Halo suffers from Gimbal lock issues stemming from the Euler-based angle system. Therefore, the project aims reworking Halo to utilise quaternions.
T2 2021
Team name: Intelligait
The Project: The student app Intelligait was developed for Next Eight Pty Ltd massage and physiotherapy clinic Director Masakazu Ashida. The Intelligait project team were asked to make an app that could be used on just about any device to analyze a human’s gait and see whether there were any anomalies. The team wanted to make the app it accessible to anyone - not just health professionals.
T1 2021
Team name: VR (Virtual Reality) Wave
The Project: The Virtual Reality Wave Selection Tool is a joint project proposed by Surfing Australia’s High-Performance Centre and Dr Leigh Ellen Potter of Griffith University. The project entails the design and creation of a virtual reality surfing simulation that assists coaching and improvement of a surfer’s wave selection skills. This project also allows for a 360˚, first person view of the surfer allowing for more in-depth live feedback from coaches.
T1 & T2 2020
Team name: Octadoc
The Project: The goal of the project was to re-design an existing online tool, Octadoc. Octadoc allows a GP to record clinic notes more efficiently by streamlining the process. The team re-designed the existing tool to be user friendly and to incorporate the ability to use different templates or create new templates in such a way that they are organised and shareable with other users.
T2 2019
Team name: Jupiter 305
The Project: Jupiter 305’s project was called the 'Virtual Space Tour', which was a working prototype aimed to enhance the learning material for 7th grade science students through virtual reality.
T1 2019
Team Name: Vietnamese Agriculture Decision Support App (VADSA)
The Project: VADSA were tasked to develop an Android app that would help farmers, specifically in the Mekong Delta, to help predict farming outcomes based on environmental conditions. VADSA used professional sources and node collection to run a prediction algorithm that gave suggestions on suitable farming techniques to maximise the probability of successful crop generation. This was all packaged on a mobile device for a farmer to use in the field.
T1 2018
Team name: Vision VR
The Project: Vision VR utilized the unique capabilities of Virtual Reality to tackle the complex issue of Health and Safety for factory and production line workers. In conjunction with Tafe Coomera, the team built an accurate virtual training space for their client, packaging company Orora, to use with training their employees to familiarize themselves with the machinery they will use in their day to day operations. The high level of detail and various training modes allow for guided training and assessment of employee's knowledge of safety features and protocols and moves toward a safer overall operation for both companies and employees.
