Boost your employability skills with a business internship

During your internship you'll learn invaluable on-the-job skills you can only earn through a work experience opportunity. You'll also gain industry experience that can help get your foot in the door and launch your career.  You'll be rubbing shoulders with professional, like-minded people and have the opportunity to learn from their experiences.

Not only that but you will earn credit points towards your degree, put your internship on your resume and maybe even land a real job!

Getting prepared

Assess your
eligibility

Have you completed 120 credit points in a single degree or 160 credit points in a double degree?

You must be at least halfway through your degree before you can apply and enrol in an internship course. Some internship courses have additional prerequisites you need to fulfil before you can enrol, read the course description carefully.

Prepare your application

Applying for an internship is just like applying for a real job. It follows a real-world, competitive recruitment and selection process—placement is not always guaranteed. As part of the application process you will need to provide a copy of your resume and for some roles a tailored application/cover letter. You should also scrub up on your interview skills as you will likely be interviewed by the internship provider before they choose whether to accept you as an intern.

Take a look at our Check-Point guide to familiarise yourself with the application process.

We recommend you complete the BusinessPLUS program before you decide to apply for an internship, to help get you job-ready.

Apply for an internship placement

The first step is to submit an application via Sonia Online. You will then need to submit your resume and Health and Safety Induction Training in order to see all the internships available for the Trimester.

It's a good idea to look at the listing like a job ad. They all have position descriptions and the desired skills/ attributes our industry partner is looking for to fulfill the role. We strongly recommend you choose an internship placement that fits well with the subjects you have studied as well as your career interests.

Select your internship preferences

Carefully review and read through the internship opportunities and select a maximum of 5 preferences.

Things to consider when selecting internship opportunities are:

  • does the opportunity match your studies/career goals?
  • is the organisation accessible to you?
  • does the organisation align with your values?

Once your preferences are submitted, wait for the organisation to contact you for an interview.

Student success stories

Nathan Brierley

Bachelor of Commerce

“When I was going to job interviews, I was able to draw on my Department of State Development internship experience and it helped me a lot,” he says. “The internship was the course I got the most out of at university, in terms of preparing me for the workplace. The job that I did at the Department was CG modelling, which makes up a lot of what I do for my career now.

“With the skills I learnt through the internship program, I was able to leverage that in the interview process to get the job I have now.”

Alvin Yap

Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of International Business

“I was so grateful to be working alongside people with Games experience and getting to learn from them. I learned so many transferable skills while working on the Commonwealth Games that it’s opened my eyes to what I can do after I graduate. You can’t really learn how to become a leader from books, you have to learn from experience and that’s what Griffith Business School gives: opportunities and experiences to get better at these skills.”

Emily Hayward

Bachelor of Business

“An internship is the most important thing you can do while studying,” she says. “To stand out in interviews you have to have relevant work experience, which could be an internship, tutoring or research assistant work … Relevant experience puts weight behind your resume. Your grades prove that you know the theory, but your experience in the field proves that you understand the application and adds value to you as a future employee.”
