Computing Training and Support for Researchers
The eResearch team and its external partners are dedicated to empowering researchers and Higher Degree Research students (HDRs) with the knowledge and resources needed; to harness the full potential of cutting-edge computing technologies.
A comprehensive array of workshops, tutorials, self-help materials and direct support offered to help with your specific needs. Whether you're looking to master a High-Performance Computer (HPC), plot data in a range of visualisations with diverse data, or learn a new skill, there will be options for you. If you do not see a resource that is helpful to you, please reach out for further support.
Workshops and Training Organisation's
At Griffith, workshops are organised by the Research Education and Development (RED) team. RED conduct researcher development programs and activities throughout the year in support of this objective, in collaboration with its partners such as eResearch and QCIF.
The programs are a combination of online and face-to-face workshops, seminars and presentations.
The Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) is a non-profit organisation that provides cutting-edge digital infrastructure capabilities for research and innovation across Queensland and Australia.
QCIF draws funding from it's partnered members and their workshops are free to any staff, researcher or HDR candidate at Griffith. QCIF hold workshops for the following categories:
- Programming
- High Performance Computing
- Bioinformatics Analysis
- Data Processing and Statistics
- Data Sharing and Reproducibility
- Surveys and Data Management
- Visualisation and Research Communication
Griffith staff only have access to Microsoft's Enterprise Skills Initiative. You can sign in using your Griffith email address and can select learning paths for many of the Microsoft products.
It's a great resource if you're looking to sharpen your technical skills or increasing your knowledge of Microsoft solutions.
Hacky Hour
Sign up to the Hacky Hour newsletter or come along to the weekly meet-up. We offer programming support and much more!
Self-Directed Learning
The Library have created self-help tutorials on the survey platforms available at Griffith:
- Qualtrics
- REDCap
- LimeSurvey
The site also includes helpful information regarding capturing research data and other services available.
Most QCIF workshops are delivered using content from The Carpentries, an open-source and non-profit researcher skills development collective. In particular, Software Carpentry, a sub-branch of The Carpentries, offer self-paced learning if you aren't able to make one of the QCIF or RED workshops. There are many lessons available, and they include:
- The Unix Shell
- Plotting and Programming in Python
- Programming with R
- Any many many more...
A free full-access subscription to all O'Reilly publications is available to Griffith University researchers signing in with Griffith University SSO. O'Reilly is a reputable learning publisher, providing self-paced material across hundreds of topics. Topics are not restricted to information technology subjects alone and include both hard skills and transferable skills. Offers publications range from programming, data engineering, business and finance and communication skills.
Looking for a specific topic?
QCIF hold regular HPC workshops. It's recommended for any researcher who intends to use a HPC cluster.
You can also go through a workshop guide at your own pace.
A HPC account is required to complete either workshop. You can request an account and find additional information through the Griffith HPC page.
Python workshops are held by Griffith and QCIF. You also have the option to go through the workshop material yourself if a workshop date doesn't work.
Software Carpentry Self-Learning Guide
We would also recommend completing the Unix guide before any python workshops to help you get familiar with a command line interface.
Programming with R workshops are held by QCIF and the Software Carpentry lesson is available for self-learning.
If you have a difficult or unusual issue with your research methods the research method advisors may be able to help further.
In the first instance, Griffith researchers are expected to seek local training and advice on research methods (statistical or mixed methods), from their school, research group or centre. If such advice proves insufficient, however, or you would like a second opinion, you can book a consultation with our Griffith University Research Methods Advisors (GURMA).
For more information and to book a consultation you can do so on the Griffith Statistical Advice website.
An extensive website on Managing and planning your data can be found on the Manage and Plan site.
You can also sign up for the self-paced Research Data Management workshop.
If you're looking for training material on a specific topic and are unable to find the resources you can get in contact to ask if the resources are available.
If they aren't available through Griffith or the partners we'll try our best effort to find relevant resources for the particular topic you are looking for.
