Staff and students have access to a range of resources to support people of diverse genders, bodies and sexualities (DGBS / LGBTQIA+) communities.
Sustainable Development Goals
Griffith University is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is committed to advancing knowledge, innovation, and practices that promote holistic health and well-being.
Staff counselling
Griffith University's staff counselling program features include:
- self-assessment tools
- information on resilience
- information on wellbeing.
Converge International has a dedicated support line for issues specific to LGBTQIA+ communities and experiences.
Student counselling
The Griffith Counselling and Wellbeing team offer a DGBS friendly service for people from all sexualities, genders and identities. Students can request a counsellor with expertise in this area through our LGBTIQ+ counselling service. Referrals from staff and students are also available.
This is a confidential service and no information will be disclosed to referring staff or Allies concerning any consultations held with students.
Internal Resources
We provide a range of DGBS and other inclusion resources available to Griffith staff and students. Our Pride in Diversity membership also enables access to a range of networks and community events.
Resources include topics such as:
- support for managers,
- domestic violence in LGBTQIA+ relationships,
- gender diversity resources,
- terminology and definitions and
- upcoming Griffith Pride events.

Rainbow Room
We have a rainbow room available for Griffith students at the Nathan campus. This space is designed to be safe, accessible, sensory-friendly space for LGBTQIA+ students. For more information, please visit our Rainbow Room website.
Inclusion in sport
A useful resource for any Griffith sporting associations, staff, or students wishing to be involved in sports is the Anti-Homophobia and Inclusion Framework for Australian Sports. A framework document to combat discrimination against same gender attracted people in sport. Pride in Diversity also provides resources through Pride in Sport. Griffith Sport is a Pride in Sport member and values inclusion in all our facilities, programs, events, and services. A commitment to inclusion not only reflects our core values but also reflects the diversity of our students, staff, and local community. Griffith Sport is committed to the inclusion of those who are sexually diverse and have diverse gender identities, including but not limited to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual. LGBTQIA+ Inclusive policies and processes
- Inclusive policies: All Griffith policies are inclusive of LGBTQIA+ staff, students and their families (where relevant).
- Gender expression: Griffith supports all employees, including trans, gender diverse and non-binary employees, to dress in a manner that best reflects their gender expression and/or gender identity. Health and safety dress requirements (for example, personal protective equipment) will be maintained. Diversity and inclusion staff can be contacted for further support and information.
- Use of facilities: We encourage staff, students and visitors to use the facilities that they feel most comfortable with and/or reflect their affirmed gender. Many of the accessible toilets are non-gendered and available for use. We also have specific non-gendered bathrooms in N79 at Nathan Campus.
- Harassment and Discrimination: The Harassment and Discrimination Officer Network provides information on resolution and support options if you have experienced harassment or discrimination. The Network is led by the Senior Lead (Inclusion and Development), who has completed LGBTQIA+ inclusion training. Please contact the Senior Lead (Inclusion and Development) to request an LGBTQIA+ Trained Contact Officer. These staff members have completed Harassment and Discrimination Contact Officer training and LGBTQIA+ inclusion training. Formal reporting can be achieved through the Report a Concern Form or through a Senior Manager, Head of Element or the Director, HR for staff. - LGBTI Legal Service
The LGBTI Legal Service offers free and confidential legal advice to Queensland residents who identify as members of the diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex community.
- Open Doors Youth Service
Provides support to young people with diverse genders, sex and sexualities. They support young people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, Pansexual, Sistergirl or Brotherboy (LGBTIQAP+, Sistergirl & Brotherboy) aged 12-24 across South East Queensland.
- The Pinnacle Foundation
Provides educational and vocational support to young adults across Australia where their gender identity, sexual orientation or sexual characteristics have prevented or hindered achievement of their career aspirations or personal development.
- Queensland Human Rights Commission
Queensland’s Human Rights Act 2019 and Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 contain specific protections for LGBTIQ+ people. Find out more on the Commission website.
- PFLAG (for parents)
Parent and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Brisbane (PFLAG) is a support group for parents of LGBTIQ people in Queensland. They also strive to support LGBTIQ+ people who are, or fear, they may be abandoned by their families. Contact PFLAG on phone 0400 767 832 or view their contact form and email options.
