About the project
The new Research Vault provides more efficient storage, increased availability, faster retrieval and enhanced security.
Benefits
- Improve data protection on Research Vault through encryption at rest.
- Replace existing end of support Storage Shelf to reduce risk (lack of vendor support).
- Improve productivity moving research archive data from Oracle HSM disk and tape to the new Research vault making it more accessible, improve availability (failover) and faster retrieval.
- Automate archiving processes to reduce handling.

Migration Schedule
Data will be migrated from the old research storage repository to the new Research Vault from February 2021. The attached schedule will be updated with site migration information as the Project Progresses.
Project progress
The project will invite specific data owners to participate in the pilot to migrate research data from the old research storage repository to the new Research Vault.
They will be asked to provide feedback on the migration and cutover process.
eResearch will send an email to all staff who use the existing Research Vault. The email will provide information about the project including how the migration will impact Researchers, the benefits of the new Vault and outage information.
To ensure the smooth migration of research data to the Vault, we worked with our eResearch team to identify an owner of the data. This person will be the project single point of contact during the migration process. Data is migrated in batches and the site owner will be contacted when their batch is scheduled.
This person will be responsible for:
- Checking data successfully migrated to new vault
- Forwarding project communication (outages, cutover information and how to connect instructions) to colleagues who need access to the new Research Vault.
- Providing feedback to the project.
Research data has now been copied from the old repository to the new Research Vault. The identified data owner needs to follow instructions to connect to the new Research Vault and perform a 5 minute sanity check. Owners need to:
- Check folders are visible and open a file (this will check read access)
- Create a new blank text file (this will check write access)
IMPORTANT: Do not add or edit research data in the new Vault. The new vault is not live at this stage and changes could result in data corruption. Please continue to use your old research storage until we confirm the cutover date.
The project team will contact the data owner to confirm the date we will cutover process. We will also provide a communication email to send to colleagues who new access to the new Research Vault.
About the cutover process
There will be a short outage during cutover. The old data repository AND new research vault will be unavailable from 4pm on the cutover date while we complete a final data migration. The new vault will be available from 10am the next day.
IMPORTANT: During the cutover process, DO NOT access the old OR new Research Vault. Changes may result in data being missed from migration or corrupted.
Once we have completed our post-migration checks, we will contact the site owner to confirm the new Research Vault is available. Access to the old research repository will be restricted to read only. We will provide instructions how to manually mount the new Research Vault on your computer.
