In partnership with Queensland Police Service (QPS), GCI hosted the 5th Future of Policing Symposium at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year's symposium theme was reducing victimisation and recidivist youth offending and the event was opened by Queensland's Minister for Police and Corrective Services The Hon Mark Ryan MP. These challenges require multi-agency responses that extend well beyond police, but which police can have a leadership role in solving. The symposium featured expert presenters and panelists from academic and practitioner backgrounds to examine the facilitators and barriers to joined-up solutions.
Presentations included:
- What are the issues - A Queensland perspective - Commissioner Ian Stewart, Queensland Police Service
- Understanding how system failures facilitate victimisaiton and youth recidivism: Lessons learned from the US - Maureen McGough, US National Institute of Justice
- New South Wales Police Force Commissioner's RISEUP Strategy - Commissioner Mick Fuller, New South Wales Police
- Crime prevention and the ordinary citizen - Dr Rebecca Wickes, Monash University
- How maltreatment and mental health contribute to youth offending - Prof Anna Stewart, Griffith Criminology Institute
- Pathways in and out of Crime - Prof Ross Homel, Griffith Criminology Institute
Over 70 guests attended the symposium including Police Commissioners from three states (Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales), the Commissioner of Queensland Corrective Services, Deputy Commissioners or senior representatives from all Australian states and New Zealand, senior representatives from the Queensland Premier and Cabinet, Queensland Treasury and the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.
