Explore the breadth of our marine expertise
The centre’s research and academic staff apply a diversity of expertise in marine biology, ecology, chemistry and engineering to our work.
To learn more about our members’ individual research strengths and research candidate supervision, follow the links below to their Griffith Experts profiles.
Professor Rod Connolly
Director, Coastal and Marine Research Centre
Rod’s projects incorporate the science and monitoring of ecosystem health into adaptation strategies. Through his work on resilience and ecosystem protection, he seeks sustainable solutions to the issues of urbanisation, food security, ecosystem services and climate variability.
An experienced marine scientist, Rod uses automated monitoring to measure fish abundance and ecosystem health on reefs, seagrass and mangroves. He also uses chemical tracers to determine carbon pathways and sequestration of blue carbon in coastal waters. His monitoring projects aim to improve conservation outcomes for coastal ecosystems.
Emeritus Professor Rodger Tomlinson
Foundation Director, Griffith Centre for Coastal Management
Founder and Director of the CMRC ’s predecessor institute, the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management (est. 1999), Rodger has more than 35 years experience in coastal and water engineering. His research interests include coastal modelling, climate variability and climate change, the implications for open coastline and coastal waterway dynamics, and urban water management.
As a prolific researcher and specialist consultant, Rodger provides advice to local municipalities for the sustainable management and planning of coastal settlements.
