Understanding marine organisms for conservation and aquaculture

Our rivers, estuaries and oceans are home to a diverse range of flora, fauna and microorganisms that play important roles in ecosystem function, ecological restoration and the aquaculture industry.

Using a combination of molecular techniques and unique datasets, we seek to understand the genetics, biodiversity, distribution and behaviours of aquatic organisms.

Coral Reef Algae Lab

Our lab investigates the positive and negative roles of tropical macroalgae in the functioning of coral reefs.

We provide fundamental knowledge on coralline algae—a group of calcareous algae critical to reef building, coral resilience and reef restoration. Our research from the Great Barrier Reef informs critical management strategies for the conservation of reef ecosystems.

Phycology and Biogeochemistry Lab

We take a catchment-to-coast approach to better understand aquatic processes, with a key focus on nutrient cycling and algal (phycology) ecology. Our research is practical, and aims to deliver outcomes for improved environment management and meet the needs of government and industry.

We work within rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and coastal environments—particularly the tropics and subtropics. We also collaborate across disciplines—including modellers, economists, engineers and chemists—to improve the quality and impact of our research.

Marine Invertebrates Lab

Shellfish and oyster reefs are culturally, economically and ecologically important to Australia’s coastlines. Research within our lab investigates the molecular biology and evolution of invertebrates—particularly molluscs.

Using molecular techniques, we aim to reveal more about the genetics of shell and pearl synthesis, deepen understanding of the role of shellfish within reef ecosystems, and improve molluscan aquaculture.
