Evaluating and safeguarding our streams, reefs and shores
More than 80% of Australians live on our coasts, relying on good coastal engineering, infrastructure, industry and tourism management to meet their needs as a population.
We study the dynamics of our coasts, estuaries and river catchment systems: how they change over time and how issues of erosion, sediment transport, flooding, weather hazards, sea levels and climate change impact both coastal communities and downstream ecosystems—especially the Great Barrier Reef.
Our research helps inform policy, build community understanding and drive active, resilient and adaptive coastal management strategies to plan for and meet the challenges that come with living near the sea.
Precision Erosion and Sediment Management
The Precision Erosion and Sediment Management research group (PrESM) is focused on developing strategies to precisely define, target and manage erosion and sediment sources in our waterways and catchments.
We use field and data-driven approaches in geomorphology and geochemistry to understand major sediment sources within our catchments. This allows us to cost-effectively reduce sediment yields and improve the water quality of downstream aquatic and marine ecosystems—particularly the Great Barrier Reef.
Coastal Dynamics and Management
The Coastal Dynamics and Management team has more than 60 years of collective experience in delivering applied coastal research and management outcomes to local and regional communities at all levels of government.
Our team helps communities undertake active and adaptive coastal management, build coastal resilience to natural disasters, protect the coastal and marine environment—as well as the social and cultural values of the region—and plan for the future challenges of living in a dynamic coastal environment.
Water Management
The Water Management team works across a range of fields related to the management of water resources. These include catchment hydrology, groundwater resources, estuarine dynamics, water resource management, pollutant monitoring, climate change impacts and more.
Our researchers have wide-ranging expertise, and a particular strength in physical, numerical and machine-learning modelling approaches.
