A professional development course delivered by experts
Since the initial offering of our Coastal Resilience Short Course in 2013, we have welcomed more than 500 participants from local government, industry and universities.
The course covers coastal resilience theory and practice for open coast and tidal waters, environments relevant to Australia and the Asia–Pacific region. Interactive sessions and study tours are a core part of the experience.
We offer two different course levels:
- Level I: Foundations (held on the Gold Coast).
- Level II: Advanced Applications (held in Byron Bay).
An online version, consisting of only the specialist lectures is available at each level for interstate and international participants unable to attend in person. Given the nature of the course, participants are encouraged to attend in person where possible.
Sustainable Development Goals
Griffith University is aligned to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is committed to preserving life below water and life on land, working to protect marine ecosystems and terrestrial biodiversity, ensuring a sustainable and biodiverse future for all.
Addressing the challenges
Hazards such as tropical cyclones, large storms and storm surges frequently challenge coastal communities in Australia and the Asia–Pacific region. Erosion, storm surges and floods threaten coastal settlements, infrastructure and ecosystems. Increasing water levels are also affecting estuaries and coastal lagoons with saltwater intrusion and inundation.
Climate variability and change, including sea-level rise trends and changes in weather patterns, are also likely to add pressure to coastal communities, with local governments carrying the burden of managing risks and improving coastal resilience. In this course, the Australian experience in managing hazards for the coastal zone and planning for the future to increase community resilience will be used as a guide for intrastate, interstate and international participants with a focus on the Asia–Pacific region.
Purpose of this course
This is a postgraduate professional development course designed to improve the understanding of coastal dynamics and impacts on settlements, infrastructure and ecosystems, and to develop skills for coastal hazard management and climate change adaptation.
This course is available to anyone with a degree (or equivalent industry experience) in a related discipline, with discounts offered to Australian Coastal Society and Engineers Australia members.
Accreditation
The course will provide credit in the form of a Griffith University Digital Badge. A Digital Badge is an innovative and globally recognised indicator of accomplishment, skill, quality or interest that can be earned through academic institutions.
