A queer space on campus

The Rainbow Society and its predecessors have faced challenges in establishing and maintaining a safe and inclusive space for queer individuals on campus. Since 2017 they have been located in N03; however, for a long time, the queer collective on campus had to move to different spaces or didn't have a space at all. In 2001, the collective protested against homophobia and the absence of a dedicated space on campus.

Our mission

The Rainbow Rooms' goal is to create an accessible, sensory-friendly, safe space for LGBTQIA+ students on Nathan Campus. Too many queer spaces are inaccessible or unsafe for disabled students, and it was important that this room is a safe space for everyone. The Rainbow Society is committed to making necessary changes to make their club a safe space for all identities.

Furthermore, while safe spaces like the library are on Nathan Campus, there must be more student common rooms and study spaces where students can feel truly comfortable. This space will be left open during the day outside of club events so people have a space to meet other queer students. Within the room, there is a kitchenette with a microwave, and it is in an accessible location with accessible room facilities, including sensory-friendly lighting.

The Rainbow Society has created a safe and welcoming space for everyone, stating, "You can only have equality for all LGBTQIA+ students if all LGBTQIA+ students can access a safe place". Having an established room that is accessible and sensory-friendly is the first step for them to improve their club. As they settle into the space, there is a plan to make necessary changes and improvements for students.

The room is open for use during the day; there will be a notice on the door when an event is in progress. Students can also keep an eye on The Rainbow Societies' socials for events. If you would like after-hours access to this space, please contact Clubs using the contacts list below.
