The student Clothing Library

Griffith student Sophie Nakamura and alumni Louise Hauser have developed the "Clothing Library" project. During separate design thinking workshops, they observed that the fast fashion industry is leading to excessive clothing consumption; meanwhile, some students need help accessing suitable clothing due to financial and other obstacles. To address this problem, they created the Clothing Library, which utilises excess clothing to provide for those in need.

The Clothing Library provides clothes to students needing business wear for interviews, internships, and work placements, using clothes sourced by donations from Griffith staff, Alumni and community organisations.

The Clothing Library goals

Our mission is to reimagine how society consumes clothing, promoting circularity and community and recognising the story behind each garment. The goals of the library are threefold:

  1. To improve student equity and employment opportunities by providing quality business wear to students at no cost.
  2. We are taking action towards climate change by reducing the Griffith community's textile consumption and waste, thereby addressing the growing societal issue of fast fashion.
  3. Raising awareness in students, staff and alumni of the prevalence of exploitation in textile supply chains and of ethical alternatives.

The Clothing Library provides a practical solution for people addressing environmental, ethical, and equity concerns. It offers an accessible way for everyone to participate, whether by donating clothes, volunteering, or choosing to borrow instead of buying cheap and unethical clothing.

The Clothing Library aims to become a community project where Griffith staff, students, and alumni can come together, learn from each other, and promote a shift in how we think about clothing consumption and conversations around fast fashion.
