Significant redevelopment of the Nathan Sciences precinct is underway
A series of upgrade activities in existing buildings and new fit-for-purpose builds are underway to uplift our learning, labs, and other research spaces to support our staff and students.
Project scope
Refurbishments are underway in several buildings across the Sciences Precinct, these include – Engineering, Technology and Aviation (N79), Science 2 (N34), Technology (N44) and Environment 1 (N55).
In addition, there will be construction of two new buildings:
- Development of a Technical Annex on the current site of Central Chiller Plant (N45) and the car park directly to the west, to be known as building N81,
- Development of a new chiller plant, to be known as Chiller Plant West (N80).
All of these projects at South Brisbane (Nathan) are being built within the existing campus footprint, including on previously developed and underutilised/unused land (i.e. brownfield sites). This approach is in line with the Nathan Campus Master Plan, which aims for all major development to be undertaken on already developed land, if feasible, within the boundary formed by the campus’ ring road.
CHILLER PLANT WEST (N80)
This new facility replaced the existing Central Chiller Plant (N45) and is the single facility servicing all of South Brisbane (Nathan), excluding N78 & N79 with their own dedicated systems.
Using detailed demand data, the team were able to accurately model requirements ensuring this new plant significantly contributes to optimising the future energy performance of South Brisbane (Nathan).
Status: Complete, March 2022
TECHNICAL ANNEX (N81)
The Technical Annex will feature three levels of integrated research, teaching & learning spaces focused on soil-based research. This mix of spaces include potting rooms, labs, rooftop greenhouses, temperature-controlled rooms, and a Soils Teaching Lab.
There are also several fit-for-purpose workshop spaces to facilitate metal works, plastics, welding, fabrication, electronic research, and development space.
Status: Construction underway

Logan development
Our campuses are also being developed at Logan, where there is considerable available space that our industry partners can utilise to provide services and facilities to the community. We have planted a native vegetation arboretum and are conducting riparian restoration on around 10 hectares of ex-pastoral land in collaboration with the Slacks Creek Catchment Restoration Group.
