Social Justice
In the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science (HLSS), social justice is central to our study and research, as it encourages us to understand our evolving societies, our diversity, our individuality and our attempts to protect and express community. We also extend this to include the exploration of human history, of human struggle and of the rights of Indigenous peoples and other minorities. While technology and automation will increasingly dominate our global communities and our individual lives, humanities and social science bring critical analysis, problem solving and creativity - crucial skills for navigating the challenges humanity faces.
We analyse and document events, issues and stories, to better appreciate how movements for change can challenge the world and our daily interactions within it. You can focus studies on issues of cultural understanding, do a service placement in a non-government organisation, or undertake research in areas such as alleviating poverty or improving access to healthcare.
Exceptional educational experience
Our staff are recognised as leaders in their fields, including winners of national research and teaching awards, such as former Australian University Teacher of the Year, Associate Professor Halim Rane.
The School plays a major role in education and training for federal and state governments, and work closely with arts, creative industries, private organisations and the community sector to respond to contemporary and complex issues. These extensive relationships also inform our degrees, which means our students graduate with the skills and capabilities to thrive, no matter what industry they choose.
