Increase your career flexibility with an introduction to teacher education

Griffith’s Pathway to Teaching is the opportunity for current students to undertake education elective courses within their non-education degree, to gain credit towards a Master of Secondary Teaching program. This pathway is designed for undergraduate students considering a career in teaching.

Increase your career flexibility

Griffith’s Pathway to Teaching allows you to explore and incorporate teacher education into your current undergraduate studies. By taking relevant courses within your elective space, you can gain insights into teaching while earning credits toward your degree.

These credits can then be applied towards the Master of Secondary Teaching, reducing your overall course fees and allowing for a lighter workload during your postgraduate study, so you can start your teaching career within 18 months.

Alignment with your current degree

To undertake this pathway, your undergraduate degree must include specialisations or majors that align to secondary teaching areas. There are many undergraduate degrees that will provide required teaching area content, some examples include:

Pathway structure

You need to first have completed 160 CP of undergraduate study. Within this, at least 60 CP must be related to one teaching area,  and 40 CP related to a second teaching area. Please check the list of secondary teaching areas below.

Notes: This pathway does not guarantee direct entry into the Master of Secondary Teaching.

Eligibility and pre-requisites

To be eligible for this pathway, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • your current undergraduate degree must offer a number of free-choice electives;
  • you must have completed at least 160 CP of your undergraduate study;
  • your undergraduate degree should include at least one 60 CP specialisation and one 40 CP specialisation that align with two secondary teaching areas offered by Griffith's School of Education and Professional Studies. A 60/60 combination permits teaching both areas up to Year 12, while a 60/40 combination allows for teaching one area up to Year 12 and the other up to Year 10. See course guidelines above;
  • specialising in Learning Enhancement and Psychology requires a minimum of 120 CP in psychology studies;
  • you must maintain a GPA of 4.0 or higher;
  • you must obtain approval from the Master of Secondary Teaching Program Director to ensure you meet the teaching content prerequisites.

How to apply

  1. Check you have the requisite content for two teaching areas as specified above. Please email the Master of Secondary Teaching Program Director via Education Connect: educationconnect@griffith.edu.au.
  2. Upon completion of your undergraduate studies, if you wish to pursue the Master of Secondary Teaching and gain teacher registration, you must apply for admission through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC)
    (domestic applicants only).
  3. Once you are accepted into Griffith for postgraduate study, you may apply for credit for the number of education electives you have completed successfully in your undergraduate degree. Please consult the Program Director if you would like advice on your lighter pathway to maximise the benefits of your prior learning.
