Congratulations on receiving an invitation to attend Phase 2 of the audition process for Queensland Conservatorium and/or Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre. You are now one step closer to finding your place on the world stage!

What to prepare

Acting

You will present your monologue from Phase 1 as well as a contrasting monologue. Your contrasting monologue can be a modern or a classical speech (that was written prior to 1950, selected from the Shakespeare era, Jacobean, Greek, Roman or Restoration, or early Australian Drama). The length must be up to two minutes. You will be stopped if you go over the time limit.

Improvisation

Through solo and group play, your improvisation skills will be explored.

Voice

Your spoken voice will be considered during the performance of your acting pieces.

Sight reading

This will be provided in the workshop.

What to wear and bring

You should wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement, and trainers.

Bring water, food and snacks.

A copy of your acting pieces (for the panel).

How to get there

By train: The Queensland Conservatorium is located approximately 300 m from the South Brisbane Train Station.

By bus: You can catch a bus from a variety of locations to the South Bank Busway Station.

By car: There are paid public car parks located nearby including in the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

On audition day

Registration: Please ensure you arrive on time and register your attendance with staff on the day. Please note that you will not be permitted to enter the building until the commencement of your session.

The audition workshop will be divided into two parts.

Part one

Introduction and welcome

Improvisation	Through solo and group play, your improvisation skills will be explored.
Sight reading	You will be asked to undertake a sight reading exercise. This will be provided in the workshop.
Movement	Through solo and group work, your physical movement skills will be explored.

Part two

Monologues	You will need to prepare a contrasting monologue for your phase 2 audition. This contrasting monologue needs to be different in energy and mood from the monologue you performed in Phase 1. It can be a modern or classical piece. Please be prepared to perform your phase 1 monologue again.
Voice	Your spoken voice will be considered during the performance of your Acting pieces.
Q&A session	You will be given the opportunity to ask about the Program or the audition process with a senior member of academic staff.

Please note: You may be ‘directed’ at any point during the audition. This is to see how well you respond to direction and to get a better idea of your potential.

What to prepare

Acting

You will present two prepared monologues. One will be from the set list provided, the other being your own choice.

Singing

You will present your prepared songs from Phase 1.

Dancing

Following basic technical exercises, a dance combination will be taught, and you will be given time to practice and asked to perform to the panel.

Voice

Your spoken voice will be considered during the performance of your monologues.

What to wear and bring

You should wear comfortable clothing suitable for dance/movement, and trainers or jazz shoes. You do not need to change into formal clothing for your singing audition.

Bring water, food and snacks, something clean / dry to put on following the dance audition, as well as a towel for any floor work. You MUST bring marked-up copies of your sheet music for the pianist.

A copy of your acting pieces (for the panel).

Finding QPAC Stage Door

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre is well situated on the Brisbane River in the heart of South Bank. Stage Door is located halfway along the pedestrian tunnel.

On audition day

Registration: You must be waiting at QPAC stage door at 8.00am (session 1) or 12.30pm (session 2) where you will be met by a member of the administration team and escorted through security to the studio. As the complex is large, late arrivals may miss the commencement of their audition session, so it is essential you are not late.

The audition workshop will be divided into two parts.

Session 1 (8:00am to 12:15pm)

Group warm-up	Through group play, your improvisation skills may be explored within a warm-up session.
Meeting/Welcome	After being welcomed and meeting the audition panel, you will split into two groups to present your songs and acting pieces.
Singing/Acting	Group one will present your prepared songs to the panel, group two will present your two monologues to the panel.
Acting/Singing	Group two will present your prepared songs to the panel, group one will present your two monologues to the panel.
Dancing	Both groups will come together for the dance audition. Following a warm-up and basic technical exercises, you will be taught a short routine which you will present to the panel.
Q&A session	You will be given the opportunity to ask about the Program or the audition process with a senior member of academic staff.

Session 2 (12:30pm to 4.45pm)

Group warm-up	Through group play, your improvisation skills may be explored within a warm-up session.

What to prepare and bring

Refer to your instrument/specialisation information on Auditions for what you need to prepare.

An accompanist is recommended for some specialisations, however, is not compulsory unless you are auditioning for Classical Voice.
Bring water, food/snacks and a towel if auditioning on a wind instrument.
Bring marked-up copies of your music for the pianist or accompanist if required, and any other requirements as listed in the relevant instrument/specialisation section on Auditions.

If you have been invited to attend an interview and performance audition, please note that it will take about 20 minutes.

If you have been invited to attend an interview only, it will take about 15 minutes.

On audition day

When you arrive proceed to Level 2. Entry to the building is via the main doors on the Parklands side of the building. The Grey Street doors are an exit point only.
Information on all auditions for the day will be available in the foyer on Level 2 during audition week, including a map of where your audition and/or warm-up room is located.
Warm-up rooms are allocated for specific specialisations and are available for use for 30 minutes prior to your audition. You will have 20 minutes practice time.
You will proceed to your audition venue 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time. You will not be collected from the room.
Staff will be available on the day if you have any questions.

Candidates are assessed at audition by an expert panel, who will use the performance and interview to assess their suitability for the programme, current level of technical and musical proficiency, and the perceived potential for technical and musical development over the course of study.

Post-audition timeline

We will review all Phase 2 audition results and prepare to make our offer recommendations to QTAC.

Prior to the offer round, you will receive advice from Griffith University about your eligibility for an offer. This advice will be sent on 8 November 2024 to your nominated email account. We will commence making formal offers via QTAC on 15 November 2024.

When will I hear the outcome?

8 November – Griffith University sends advice about your eligibility for an offer
13 November – Due date to change your QTAC preference in time for the offer round by 11:00am
15 November – First offers will be made via QTAC
