Audition information for all specifications
Admission to the Bachelor of Music involves two stages: a portfolio submission and an in-person audition/interview. After submitting your QTAC application, follow the below audition instructions.
Audition requirements
Phase 1 - Submit your audition portfolio
On-time applications are now closed.
You must submit this in order to be considered for invitation to a live audition in phase 2. You will be considered based on the quality of your performance/works - your skills, ability, and technique – not the quality of the recording, which can be done using your phone, camera or tablet. We recommend you check out the audition video tips for help with preparing your submission.
If you are an instrumentalist or singer:
Three video files of songs/pieces/movements/excerpts, each of 3-5 minutes in duration.
We encourage you to choose pieces that you feel best represent you as a musician, including one piece that stretches your skill and identity (e.g. a piece from a different genre, something of your own creation etc.). If choosing excerpts, you should be prepared to present these pieces in full if invited to the live audition.
If you create your own music e.g composition, songwriting, music technology:
Original music you have created yourself as high-quality mp3, wav or aiff files (maximum file size 300 MB ) - no more than 15 minutes of audio overall, or maximum three different works. Please submit complete pieces.
Please carefully review the submission advice which you see as most relevant for your creative outputs (creative music technology, composition and song-writing).
We encourage you to choose pieces that you feel best represent you as a musician, including one piece that stretches your skill and identity.
Every application must also submit an artistic statement - respond to the following questions (no more than 300 words for each):
- Tell us about your aspirations for your musical career and the possibilities you can envisage outside of your main goals.
- Tell us about your broader musical/artistic experiences or interests
- To what extent are you involved in creating music? Describe how you share your creations.
- What genres do you feel most excited by and which would you wish to explore at the Conservatorium?
- Tell us about your video portfolio of materials. Why did you choose your particular pieces and how do you feel they represent you? We would be particularly interested here of your third choice (what you considered the ‘stretch’ choice) in the mix.
Advice in relation to your field of specialisation
Phase 2 - Live audition and interview
On-time applications are now closed.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a live audition/interview, held on-site at the Conservatorium from 23-27 September 2024. Offers will be made based on assessment of the live audition/interview.
The audition/interview will include three elements:
- Full performances or excerpts from your portfolio of creative work (10 minutes) / discussion around your creative work (please note that, if applying in two areas, you will be invited to complete 1 live audition including both areas). You may be asked to perform full performances or excerpts from the contrasting pieces of your choice submitted in Phase 1, however not all pieces will necessarily be heard in their entirety.
- Some interactions with you around your specialisation: this may include some quick musicianship exercises or, for performers, a short example of sight-reading /quick study and will normally be in response to your live audition or observations made in relation to your portfolio. This is to give the panel greater insight into your stage of development and is only used to influence positively our consideration of your suitability as a future Conservatorium student. (5 minutes)
- The interview will focus on your directions and goals, musical experience, musical knowledge and general education. Your artistic statement submitted alongside your recorded audition may be referred to and assist in discussions at your interview. (5 minutes)
Please note, accompanists are required to be organised by you - here is a list of suggested accompanists.
Diploma of Music pathway
Audition fees, requirements and due dates for the Diploma of Music pathway and the Bachelor of Music are the same. You only need to pay a single audition fee and submit a single audition folio if you have applied for both programs.
To help you make the best use of your QTAC preferences, we’ll also automatically consider you for a Diploma of Music offer if you apply for the Bachelor of Music and don’t quite meet the requirements for an offer.
