Abi Billin

Bachelor of Fine Art - Studio Art

As a psychologist, I am interested in the consciousness of the self contained by the body. Skin is the edge of embodiment, the place where we gather sensory data to confirm distinctness from others. But that boundary is also fragile, easily disrupted, and fragmented. These indexical prints of my skin laid flat, look closely at the(my) skin container, reflecting on its vulnerability.

Data Echo' is my response to the digital. As our primary mode of connection and understanding, digital engagement is often compulsive and fleeting, its processes of creation hidden from the viewer. Hand-printed in multiple layers, these prints slow down and materially embed time and process within the surface creating a different relational experience. As handmade objects and sites for slow perceptual response, these prints highlight digital fluidity and artifice.

'Prince is a word with a star tied to it' is a series of prints exploring the concern for Generation Z as targeted consumers of 'vicarious nostalgia'. This type of nostalgia predates the birth of the consumer - past the lived experience, and toward a fictional representation of various bygone eras. In the case of Gen Z, the first true digital natives, the invitation to engage in a past that offers authentic experience is a welcome one - however, not without cost.

Combing deep field of colour overlaid with repetitive mark making, All and Nothing records my internal state of being, speaking to the lasting effects of trauma. The marks are subtle from a distance, but upon closer inspection the effect is profound, the painting is riddled with these marks. They reach into every corner and no part is left unmarked.

I explore how we construct and alter our identity in order to be perceived in an ideal way. Research into the dynamic between self-presentation and self-perception led me to question whether this is performative or protective. We know when we like something, but to clarify why we experience that appreciation, those feelings and thoughts, is difficult. Playing on the conventions of painting, Untitled establishes an uneasy relationship between the paint and surface. These formal problems are analogous to my experience of cultural identity, where a sense of belonging is implied but not resolved. The plastic horses (a self-reference to my year of the horse) move around the painterly minefield; trying to have a good sense of humour.

Col Mac

Bachelor of Fine Art - Studio Art

This is not a ghost story responds to an absence of contemporary cultural myths and how that effects our relationship with place and the past. Drawing from 18th century symbolism I use recognisable ghost story motifs to reflect on overlapping histories. Paintings and fragmented mirrors show these relationships as both static and alive; allowing us to experience more than one time simultaneously.

Embellished ceramic bananas embody popular culture and queer sexuality. Juxtaposed on found crates, blocks and ply sheets, they highlight the fetishisation of objects as products of desire. Working in luxury sales and being of Thai descent, I became aware of labour involved in the studio and the items that I sell. Each piece of fruit is individual, meticulously assembled, yet produced as if in a factory. The banana is playful, symbolising fruit or phallus.

My still life is motivated by a desire to reflect rather than make meaning off the objects presented. This series of paintings focuses on unconventional methods of representation whilst illuminating the unseen or overlooked. I chose to concentrate my visuality not so much on the objects represented, but on the surface of the glass. This requires time and the slowing down of vision, looking closely and observing the intricacies of the overlooked.

Reframing the Ideal proposes a re-vision of the social ideal of feminine beauty with its destructive effects on our sense of self. From birth we are watched, judged and taught to conform. By hijacking the tradition of the "nude" and using paint and discarded fabric to create sites of feminist resistance, I offer alternative possibilities where the naked female is subversive, undisguised and freely imperfect.

Informed by 17th century Dutch genre-painting, which depicted everyday peasant life through frankness and social satire, these paintings reflect on chronic illness and its accompanying cultural taboos. Through repurposing these symbols in a contemporary context, the prejudices once integral to the works become absurd and humorous. In illustrating the mundane, impolite realities of chronic illness I reflect on the universality of sickness.
