Transformative Musical Theatre Education for Tomorrow's Leading Performers
The Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre, Griffith University (QAEMT) at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) opened its doors to our younger community in 2024, offering training for students in years 10 and above who are passionate about musical theatre.
Continuing in 2025, our pre-tertiary classes are designed to enhance technique, boost confidence on stage and in performances, and foster a supportive, kind, and enriching ensemble.
Running on Saturdays during QLD school terms from 9.00am to 3.00pm, students take classes in Dance, Acting, and Singing, as well as an Ensemble class that integrates all three essential performance skills.
Core classes
Musical Theatre Dance
With a focus on scaffolding the skills required for the world of musical theatre dance, this class will incorporate elements such as conditioning, flexibility, jazz technique for musical theatre, audition technique and choreographic variations, throughout the term.
Musical Theatre Acting
Throughout the year, this class will delve into the foundations of the actor’s tool-kit – covering improvisation, sight-reading, monologue, and scene discovery and of course, audition preparation.
Musical Theatre Group Singing
This class offers the singer the opportunity to work on the core foundations of both vocal technique and musicianship, with as much value placed on the development of the individual facility as it is on the fundaments of harmony and vocal blending within the musical theatre ensemble. Audition preparation and repertoire exploration may also be a focus of this class.
Ensemble class
Ensemble classes offer the opportunity to explore training concepts covered in morning classes, with a focus on performance-level experience. Song and Dance, Scene to Song, Audition technique, Mock auditions, Demonstrations and Showings play a part in this ensemble class. The requisite core skills of dancing, acting, and singing will be woven into this class, building the essentials to prepare the young artist for the next step into tertiary-level performance training.
Classes are taught by the subject specialist staff working with students in our highly regarded and successful Bachelor of Musical Theatre program.
