Apply for credit transfer—Open Universities Australia (OUA) students
When you accept an offer to study at Griffith, you may be able to apply for credit for prior learning.
This can reduce the time and cost involved in completing your degree.
Griffith grants credit for prior study and prior experience.
Examples of prior study (formal learning) include:
- study at another Australian higher education provider
- study at a recognised international institution
- credentialed programs provided by recognised professional bodies or employers.
Examples of prior experience include:
- informal learning, which takes place through a structured program of learning which does not lead to an officially accredited qualification; examples include learning and training activities undertaken in the workplace, voluntary sector or community-based settings
- non-formal learning, which is gained through work, social, family, hobby or leisure activities; unlike informal learning, non-formal learning gained through experience is not structured in terms of objectives, time or learning support.
Step 1—Check your degree requirements
Before applying for credit, make sure you’re familiar with the program and course (subject) requirements for your chosen Griffith degree.
Use the search bar on the Programs and courses page to find your degree and its courses. This will help you understand which courses are required and whether the program has elective options.
If you have any questions about your degree, contact us.
Step 2—Search the Credit Precedent Database
The Credit Precedent Database below displays which courses (subjects) we’ve previously approved for credit, so you can check what’s already been granted in the past.
Please note: If your prior courses are listed and match your degree, you won’t need to provide course outlines. If you’ve studied at more than one provider, check each course carefully before applying.
If you're enrolled in a Griffith University OUA degree
You can apply for credit using the Credit for Prior Learning application if you have:
- been offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)* in a Griffith OUA undergraduate degree
- enrolled in Griffith OUA Open Access (Non-award) subjects as part of a Griffith OUA degree
- been accepted into aa Griffith OUA postgraduate degree.
*Note: Applications for admission into a Commonwealth Supported Place are administered by OUA. Please refer to their website to see if you are eligible.
If you're enrolled in a Griffith degree and studying individual Griffith OUA Open Access (Non-award) subjects
You can request that your OUA studies be transferred into your Griffith degree by emailing our credit team ensuring you advise your GU ID and degree.
Step 3—Apply for credit
If you’ve received your offer of admission and the Starting at Griffith email, you can apply for credit at any time using the Credit for Prior Learning Application.
Important: We can’t process applications for credit for courses (subjects) you’re currently enrolled in if the census date has passed.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
- Don’t apply for more than 18 courses in one submission. Use a second application if you need to.
- Only list courses relevant to your Griffith degree. If you’re eligible for elective credit, this will be applied when your application is assessed. See the Programs and courses page for more information about elective requirements.
Questions? We’re here to help. Contact Ask us or email credit@griffith.edu.au.
Step 4—Track your application
After you submit your application, our team will assess your eligibility. If we haven’t previously granted credit for your course, we’ll consult with relevant academics to determine how much credit you may receive. We aim to maximise your credit based on what you’ve already studied. We’ll contact you if we need more information.
Once submitted, you’ll receive a Track My Application link via email so you can follow your application’s progress.
If you need any help or don’t hear from us before the first week of the study period/session, please get in touch at credit@griffith.edu.au.
When should I apply?
You can submit a credit application for future courses (subjects) at any time. However, applications cannot be accepted for courses you're currently enrolled in if the census date has passed.
We recommend submitting your application no later than 4 weeks before enrolments close at OUA . This is to guarantee a decision prior to the start of a study period/session, as the outcome may impact your course selection.
Please note: these timeframes differ from those for students enrolled directly with Griffith University.
Use the Credit Precedent Database to search for precedents where Griffith has awarded credit for previous OUA study.
