She also discusses how she balances her MBA studies with her leadership role, her future ambitions, and the key ingredients for building a successful and sustainable SaaS (Software as a service) organisation.

Describe your current role at A2X. What challenges and rewards does it present?

My role as the Head of Customer Success and People at A2X presents unique challenges and, equally, unique rewards. One of the distinctive challenges I navigate daily is the global nature of our operations. A2X operates in a remote and interconnected world, which means we manage a diverse team spread across different time zones and cultures. For many organisations, this can introduce complexities related to communication, collaboration, and understanding varying customer needs in different regions. However, these challenges provide me with the opportunity to develop innovative strategies to foster effective remote work, harmonise our global team, and tailor our customer success approach to suit diverse markets.

On the flip side, successfully tackling the aforementioned challenges as part of my role as Head of Customer Success and People presents a unique set of rewards. From a customer perspective, witnessing the success of our customers on a global scale is incredibly fulfilling. We also get to help businesses from diverse accounting backgrounds thrive with our solutions, and witnessing their growth is a constant reminder of the impact we have. From a people perspective, seeing our team members flourish and contribute to our company's success is immensely gratifying. Nurturing a sense of unity and belonging within a globally distributed team is a rewarding journey.

In essence, my role at A2X combines the complexities of global remote work with the undeniable satisfaction of making a meaningful impact on our customers and talented team members.

Can you tell us about your journey into the SaaS (Software as a Service) industry? What initially drew you to this dynamic field?

My journey into the world of Software as a Service (SaaS) was quite serendipitous. Prior to my involvement in the SaaS industry, I had a solid foundation in corporate accounting and financial control roles, primarily in the construction and hospitality-sporting sectors. These experiences allowed me to develop a strong understanding of financial management and the intricacies of these industries.

I eventually started working for myself as an SMB (Small to Medium Business) accountant, and it was during this period that I stumbled upon the opportunity at A2X, a small but promising SaaS business at the time. A2X's focus on accounting and its specialisation in serving e-commerce businesses immediately piqued my interest. I joined the team when it consisted of just a handful of individuals, and from the very beginning, I was captivated by the world of e-commerce and SaaS.

What initially drew me to this field was the opportunity to combine my financial expertise with the ever-evolving technology landscape. The potential to streamline and enhance financial processes for e-commerce businesses was a compelling proposition. As I delved deeper into this niche, I quickly realised the tremendous impact that accurate and efficient accounting solutions could have on an e-commerce company's growth and success.

One of the most rewarding periods of my career has been my time with A2X. Watching the company evolve from a small team to nearly 90 dedicated professionals has been remarkable. It's not just the growth of the company but also the satisfaction of contributing to the success of our clients in the e-commerce industry that has made this experience incredibly fulfilling. Being a part of A2X's growth story has been the highlight of my career to date, and it continues to inspire my passion for e-commerce SaaS and accounting solutions.

How do you balance the demands of your MBA studies with your leadership role at A2X? What strategies do you employ for effective time management and self-care?

Balancing the demands of my MBA studies with my leadership role at A2X is a juggling act that I've learned to master. Given my schedule, I primarily allocate my study time during the evenings and on weekends.

To manage my commitments effectively, I've implemented a structured approach to time management. During the workweek, I ensure that my leadership responsibilities at A2X take priority, allowing me to fully engage with my team and address immediate business needs.

On weekday evenings and weekends, I transition into my MBA studies, dedicating focused blocks of time to coursework, lectures and assignments. This approach allows me to delve deeply into my studies without compromising the efficiency and effectiveness of my role at A2X.

Additionally, I rely on digital tools and online resources to make the most of my study sessions, optimising productivity.

Amidst these demands, it's crucial not to overlook self-care. I'm fortunate to live in close proximity to Magnetic Island, which serves as my getaway for 'island time’. These periodic escapes provide me with the much-needed relaxation and rejuvenation to maintain a balanced and sustainable lifestyle.

Moreover, spending quality time with my animals also plays a significant role in my self-care routine. Whether it's taking a leisurely walk with my dogs or simply enjoying the company of my pets, these moments provide a sense of calm and connection, further contributing to my overall well-being.

In essence, my strategy revolves around a careful allocation of time, ensuring that I meet the demands of both my MBA studies and my leadership role at A2X, all while finding moments of respite on Magnetic Island and cherished moments with my beloved animals.

What are your future ambitions, and how do you envision your MBA and A2X experience shaping your trajectory towards those goals?

My future ambitions revolve around continued growth within A2X and the tech industry, with a strong focus on general management, future sustainability, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

My MBA journey has played a pivotal role in shaping these ambitions, providing me with a broader perspective on business strategy, leadership, and global trends. Through my studies, I've gained valuable insights into sustainable practices and ethical considerations, deepening my commitment to positively impacting the tech industry.

My experience at A2X has been equally instrumental and unique. A2X, being a global and remote organisation from its early stages, has necessitated the implementation of fair, equitable, and ethical treatment of our team members. This emphasis on fairness and inclusivity has shaped my leadership philosophy and strengthened my resolve to foster a diverse and respectful work culture. Being part of A2X's growth story and witnessing the transformative power of technology on businesses has ignited my passion for the tech industry and STEM while reinforcing the importance of adaptability and innovation in this ever-evolving landscape.

Looking ahead, I envision myself in leadership positions that leverage technology to drive business success while championing sustainability. My goal is to contribute to the science and tech industry's efforts to align with the SDGs, working towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

In summary, my MBA studies and my journey at A2X, with its global and remote nature, have provided me with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to excel further in the STEM industries. My commitment to sustainability and alignment with the SDGs remains unwavering, and I am dedicated to fostering a diverse and respectful workplace culture. My vision is to play a significant role in leveraging technology for business success while upholding values of fairness, equity, and ethics within my current role and beyond.

In your opinion, what are the key ingredients for building a successful and sustainable SaaS organisation?

In my personal opinion, building a successful and sustainable SaaS organisation requires a combination of key ingredients:

Innovative Technology: A strong foundation in innovative and scalable technology is essential. The software should address specific pain points and provide a clear value proposition to customers.

Customer-Centric Approach: Prioritising customer needs, feedback, and satisfaction is paramount. Engaging with customers as an extension of their team helps refine the product and build long-term relationships.

Talented Team: Assembling a skilled and motivated team is crucial. This includes high-level product and technical talent, sales and marketing experts, and customer support professionals who are passionate about the company's mission, vision and products.

Effective Sales and Marketing: Successful SaaS companies have a well-defined customer acquisition and retention strategy. This includes understanding the target audience, creating compelling content, and leveraging digital marketing channels.

Scalable Business Model: The pricing structure should be scalable, flexible, and aligned with value delivery, allowing for growth and catering to different customer segments.

Data Security and Compliance: With increasing data regulations (GDPR, for example), robust data security and compliance measures are non-negotiable. Customers must trust that their data is handled with care and in accordance with regulations.

Continuous Improvement: A commitment to continuous improvement and innovation is vital. Regularly updating the software, adding new features, and staying ahead of industry trends ensures relevance and competitiveness.

Financial Sustainability: Maintaining a healthy financial foundation, managing costs, and ensuring consistent revenue streams are essential for long-term sustainability.

Ethical Practices: Upholding ethical standards in all aspects of the business, including fair treatment of employees and responsible use of data, builds trust and reputation.

Environmental Responsibility: Considering the environmental impact and adopting sustainable practices is increasingly important. This aligns with societal expectations and can contribute to long-term success.

Global Perspective: In an interconnected world, having a global perspective and potentially expanding internationally can open up new markets and growth opportunities.

Adaptability and Resilience: The ability to adapt to market changes, economic fluctuations, and unexpected challenges is crucial for survival and sustainability.

In summary, a successful and sustainable SaaS organisation combines technology, customer focus, talent, effective sales and marketing, scalability, data security, and a commitment to ethics, sustainability, and adaptability. It's a multifaceted approach that requires constant vigilance and dedication to delivering value to customers and the broader community.

How would you describe the online MBA learning environment? Has anything surprised you?

The online MBA learning environment has been a transformative experience for me, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the advancements in online education. Having previously completed my Bachelor of Accounting online while working full time, I can attest to the significant differences between then and now.

One striking aspect of the online MBA experience is the abundance of support available. It's remarkable how universities have adapted to provide students with a robust support system. From dedicated academic advisors to tech support and an array of resources, I've always felt well-supported throughout my journey.

Another notable improvement is the quality and engagement level of the study materials. The materials provided for the online MBA program have not only been comprehensive but also highly engaging. Incorporating multimedia elements, interactive content, and real-world case studies has made the learning experience much more dynamic and enjoyable.

Perhaps one of the most significant surprises for me has been the accessibility of professors. Unlike my previous experience, where communication with instructors was limited, in the current online MBA program, I've found it remarkably easy to connect with professors. Their willingness to engage in discussions, provide guidance, and offer insights has been a game-changer in my educational journey.

What has been your favourite MBA course thus far, and why?

My favourite MBA course thus far has been Sustainability and Systems Thinking. This course holds a special place for me because it aligns perfectly with my passion for future sustainability and my dedication to aligning with the SDGs.

What I particularly appreciate about this course is the emphasis on systems thinking. It has allowed me to gain a more holistic perspective on various aspects of business. The ability to analyse complex, interconnected systems has proven invaluable in my approach to solving real-world challenges and making strategic decisions.

Overall, the Sustainability and Systems Thinking course enriched my understanding of sustainability and equipped me with a valuable skillset for tackling multifaceted problems, making it my favourite course thus far in the MBA program.
