Supporting our elite athletes to reach the podium and beyond

Griffith University has made an indelible mark at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, setting a new benchmark for university sporting achievements on the global stage.

With 38 athletes representing Griffith – including current students, alumni, and members of the Griffith swimming squad – the University celebrated an impressive 24 medals: 10 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze.

If Griffith were a standalone country, our athletes’ results would have placed us 11th on the Olympic medal tally, above nations like Canada and New Zealand. In terms of event medal wins, Griffith would rank 13th overall – an extraordinary achievement that showcases the dedication, resilience, and talent of our elite athletes, as well as the strong support network that fuels their success.

Behind each medal is a story of perseverance and commitment, with Griffith playing a pivotal role in enabling these athletes to reach their full potential both in sport and in education.

“For me to be fully focused on my sport, I need the reassurance that my life after sport isn’t suffering because of it. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of Griffith University. I’ve had countless assessment dates moved due to training and competition schedules, additional tutors, and the option to complete online learning. I wouldn’t be an Olympic silver medallist without it.”
