Students are feeling the effects of the rising cost of living

Lily, a Bachelor of Nursing graduate from Ballina recieved life-changing financial support from The George Alexander Foundation which helped fund her living costs while on placement. Lily faced some daunting challenges but her resilience, community commitment and transformative journey through her degree has her poised for impactful contributions to the healthcare sector.

Navigating my final year of the degree required more unpaid placement hours than ever before. This scholarship has been a game-changer, providing the financial freedom to fully immerse myself in these learning opportunities without the added stress of managing rent, bills and food.

Lily Murphy, Bachelor of Nursing

"In the midst of a challenging few years, I encountered numerous obstacles on my academic journey. Despite the difficulties, I take immense pride in persevering and successfully concluding this chapter of my education. As I stand on the threshold of a new phase, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunities and experiences that the next chapter of my life holds.

Beyond academics, I've been actively involved in mentoring fellow students, leading orientation events, and supporting first year students during their initial nursing placements.”

“Community engagement is a core part of who I am. From coaching and mentoring at my hometown' s Surf Life Saving club to coordinating youth leadership programs across NSW, this scholarship has allowed me to continue contributing to these important aspects of my life. Additionally, my involvement in the Griffith University Water Polo Club adds another layer of vibrant university experiences.

This year has been a whirlwind of completing my nursing degree, attending interviews, and securing a Registered Nursing position in Wollongong. Moving from a regional town to the Gold Coast for studies, I've always aspired to explore different areas through my career. The plan includes eventually taking my nursing expertise to third world countries in Africa, focusing on healthcare education for sustainable health outcomes.

While I'm grateful not to have faced major hurdles this year, managing the demands of completing my degree, handling job applications, and organising a significant move for my career has been a complex juggling act. It's been a test of competence and stress management, revealing my ability to handle more than I initially thought I could. My proudest achievement has undeniably been reaching the finish line and graduating.”

Lily’s scholarship was made possible by the generosity of the George Alexander Foundation.  For over 20 years the Foundation has supported Griffith students who might otherwise not benefit from a university education. Griffith is incredibly proud to be one of the founding recipients of the George Alexander Foundation Scholarship program and is grateful to have such a strong and enduring partnership that is supporting transformative education for all.
