Join the Staff Giving Program
Rebecca Seymour is a Business Transformation Manager in Student Life, based at the Nathan campus.
Rebecca first attended a Staff Giving event in 2016 and heard a disadvantaged student share their story of how a scholarship funded through the Staff Giving program, really helped them. It was, as she says, “a no brainer to join the program.”
Five years on, Rebecca is currently buddying Laura Tyler (pictured above), a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Government and International Relations student, who aspires to be an international human rights lawyer using restorative justice in conflict and post-conflict nations. Rebecca has been a buddy before and says:
“All the students I have buddied are so appreciative of their scholarship and Laura is super grateful and thankful too. We connect by email and Teams. Laura has been going well this year and has transitioned well to online delivery and enjoying her studies. I may not get to meet Laura in person this year, but Teams is such an easy platform to use.”
“I have good networks across the university, having worked at Griffith for 18 years. I can point students in the right direction and sometimes it can be that one contact, that really makes a big difference to the students.”
Rebecca goes on to explain why she believes the buddy program is important.
“Staff buddies give students a real person to thank and get a connection with. Giving back to the students for me is really about what I can do to support them. It’s not just financial, it’s having that personal contact with students and when staff get to experience that, they will understand how the scholarship makes such an impact in their lives.”
