Born prematurely at just 25 weeks, Paralympian Matt Levy’s early life was marked by numerous medical challenges, including cerebral palsy and vision impairment.
Over the years he has undergone more than fifty surgeries on his brain, heart, lungs and ears. His story is one of resilience and determination, and he strives to inspire and support others facing their own challenges.
“Swimming became a crucial part of my rehabilitation, helping me keep my body active,” he explains. “I discovered my competitive spirit in 2000, which set the stage for my career as a Paralympic swimmer.”
Since his professional debut in 2004, Matt has represented Australia in five consecutive Paralympic Games. His medal tally includes 3 gold, 1 silver, and 6 bronze medals, and he has set 10 world swimming records.
Beyond the pool, Matt wears many hats. He serves as a passionate charity ambassador, advocating for inclusion and wellbeing. He is also a motivational speaker and author of two books, including “Go the Distance.”
In recognition of the impact that support and opportunities for people with disabilities can have, Matt established the Matt Levy Inclusive Futures Scholarship at Griffith University. This scholarship aims to empower students with disabilities, providing them with financial assistance and educational opportunities during their studies.
“Having faced numerous physical and financial hurdles, I understand the profound impact that support and opportunities can have on one's life,” he says.
“Griffith University's commitment to inclusivity and support for students with disabilities resonates deeply with my values. Through this scholarship, I aim to empower students facing similar challenges, offering them the chance to pursue their academic and personal goals without the added burden of financial hardship. This scholarship is not just about providing financial aid; it's about fostering an inclusive environment where all students can thrive and achieve their full potential.”
Matt’s hope is that the scholarship can demonstrate that with the right support, individuals with disabilities can achieve remarkable success. “Ultimately, I want this scholarship to contribute to a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact.”
He enjoys meeting with the scholarship recipients each year and witnessing their success and growth. “I am grateful for the opportunity to give back and to be part of a community that values and supports diversity and inclusion. My hope is that this scholarship will continue to inspire and empower students for many years to come,” he says.
“To the students who will benefit from the scholarship, I want to say that you are capable of achieving greatness, no matter the obstacles you face. Your journey may be challenging, but remember that your resilience and determination are your greatest strengths. Use this scholarship as a stepping-stone to pursue your dreams and goals with unwavering confidence. Embrace the opportunities that come your way, and don't be afraid to push your boundaries. Always remember that you are not alone in this journey; there is a community of supporters cheering you on. Stay focused, stay determined, and never lose sight of your potential.”
