Jo Spring and Chris McCotter's story began at Griffith University's Nathan campus, a place that would become more than just an educational institution for them. It was here, while both were studying for their Bachelor of Science degrees, that their paths first crossed, where a friendship blossomed into love, and where their lifelong journey together commenced.
The common room in the Australian Environmental Studies (AES) building became their regular hangout spot. Jo, deeply engaged in her studies, often found herself in the company of friends, including Ngaire Graham, who played a crucial role in their story. As it was Ngaire who introduced Jo to Chris one morning, a brief encounter that would soon transform into something extraordinary.
A few weeks later, fate brought them together again in the same common room. Jo and Chris’s eyes met across the room, and it was love at first sight. Their connection deepened through shared interests and experiences on campus.
Jo’s time at Griffith was marked by her role as a SPIM (Self-Paced Instruction in Math's) proctor, where she guided her peers through their academic journeys. She thrived on the hands-on experiences from excursions and labs. Chris found his time at Griffith equally enriching. He enjoyed his courses, inspired by passionate lecturers, and the vibrant campus bands added a melodic rhythm to his university experience.
Their most cherished memory was their wedding on the 17th June 1984 at the Undercroft on Griffith's Nathan campus. This rustic and serene spot was transformed into a romantic haven for their intimate ceremony, attended by close friends and family. The celebration continued at the Casbar, a popular student haunt known for its lively atmosphere, where they danced and celebrated their love with loved ones.
After university, their paths took different but complementary directions. Jo pursued a multifaceted career in academia, teaching, and business, blending intellectual pursuits with practical applications. Chris dedicated his life to teaching, making a lasting impact on his students. Their love for learning and adventure remained a constant in their lives.
Now retired, Jo and Chris have embraced a new chapter. They bought an old art deco Greek cafe in the countryside, where they enjoy a slower pace of life and the charm of their new surroundings. They have two children and three grandchildren. Their family is the cornerstone of their lives.
Jo reminisces on their relationship together: “We are partners in life and love learning, living, traveling and keeping busy together. Our family of children and grandchildren are the most important cornerstones in our life. The environment and environmental issues continue to remain essential priorities in our life as well.”
As Chris and Jo celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year, their journey from that fateful meeting in the AES common room to their current adventures is a testament to the enduring power of love. Griffith University, with its vibrant atmosphere and lasting impact, played a pivotal role in their story, setting the stage for a lifetime of discovery, growth, and lasting true love.
